L’Algérie lance un projet de bus à hydrogène vert – Le Jeune Indépendant

Algeria has taken a major step in its energy transition with the launch of the project to manufacture an engine operating with green hydrogen (Bahu) for buses. This initiative will make it possible to develop public transport, in addition to considerably reducing carbon emissions and saving almost 31 % of local energy production, marking a strategic advance towards sustainable development.

The launch ceremony took place this Sunday in Algiers, under the supervision of the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Kamel Baddari. This green hydrogen bus program is part of the “enhancement of research and development results, and the transformation of innovation into industrializable solutions”, said a statement from the ministry.

This project, which consists in converting diesel engines of transport buses into powder hydrogen engines, alone should save almost 31% of local energy production, according to the same source. Beyond this major energy impact, the initiative will significantly reduce carbon emissions related to diesel and support the national sustainable development strategy included in the 2024-2029 government program.

The ceremony was held in the presence of representatives of National Defense, the Central Directorate of Military Industries, the Director General of Scientific Research and Technological Development, the director of the National School of Renewable Energies, as well as several researchers and managers of research centers, alongside the National Society of Industrial Vehicles (SNVI).

Investment in the field of green hydrogen constitutes a strategic lever to strengthen national energy sovereignty, reduce dependence on fossil fuels and diversify the national economy. The generalization of hydrogen engines in urban and interurban transport would make it possible to profoundly transform the sector, by making it cleaner and more efficient, it is said from the same source.

It should be noted that Algeria has major advantages, like the sunshine, wind potential and energy infrastructure, which place it in good position to become a key in the production and export of hydrogen, especially towards European countries, including Italy, Germany. This allows it to attract technological partnerships and foreign investments, in a context where green hydrogen stands out as one of the energies of the future, capable of meeting environmental issues and increasing energy needs.

At the same time, it should be recalled that Algeria intends to become an important producer of green hydrogen and ultimately plans to cover by its exports 10% of the needs of the European Union through the realization of South2 Corridor. This project is a strategic agreement between Algeria and several European countries (Italy, Germany, Austria) aimed at establishing a large pipeline to transport green hydrogen from North Africa to Europe. The project, which provides a 3,300 km long pipeline, will provide up to 4 million tonnes of green hydrogen to EU countries by 2030, an ambitious objective that positions Algeria as a key player in the world hydrogen market thanks to its potential for renewable energies and its human resources. Thus, the country will be able to improve its economic perspectives, create new jobs and diversify its energy sources.
