“Let’s do 4e Edition of the intra-African trade fair (IATF 2025) a new start for Africa, a strong continent, developed “, which” takes its future in hand “. This is the call launched by the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, heads of state and African officials, to unite the forces in order to build the Africa of tomorrow, a continent that must find the place that stands on the international scene.
Faced with a host of African leaders, the President of the Republic gave Thursday from the International Center for Abdellatif-Rahal Conferences, the official kick-off of the 4e Edition of the IATF 2025, where he made an inventory of the African economy and demonstrated the role of Algeria in continental development. He especially exposed his vision and drawn a roadmap that will lead Africa to a prosperous future.
It is by an observation of the economic situation in which this new edition of the IATF is held that the President of the Republic began his intervention before heads of state, heads of government and several officials of continental institutions.
According to President Tebboune, the 4e Edition of the IATF, which Algeria houses until September 10, intervenes in a particular international conjuncture, marked by unprecedented changes which will lead to a recomposition of the world. The “fear” today is that Africa is the victim of this repositioning, marginalized in the reconfiguration of the new world order, despite the great potential of the continent, said the president. Affirming that “today’s concern is economic par excellence”, Mr. Tebboune said that “this meeting is not simply an economic demonstration”, “it aims to be the embodiment of the collective consciousness which animates us all to build an integrated continent, a continent with the strong and influential will in its regional and international environment”.
Get out of marginalization and reposition Africa internationally
The Head of State wondered about the place of Africa in the world economy. Highlighting the various achievements accomplished during the last two decades, particularly the implementation of the African continental free trade area (Zlecaf) as well as the various partnerships established with economic powers and institutions, Mr. Tebboune estimated that “the path is still long” and that it is necessary to repair the “historical injustices” towards Africa. In this sense, it has established an observation of the economic situation on the continent.
According to him, “Africa is excluded from the international economic decision because of its marginalization within the majority of international economic, commercial and financial institutions”, evoking the low shares that Africa holds in these institutions. He thus cited the example of the continent in voting rights to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which does not exceed 6.5 %, the weakest within this organization, while its share to the World Bank does not exceed 11 %.
Concerning the World Trade Organization (WTO), the President of the Republic stressed that “despite obtaining Africa from the post of director general of this organization for the first time in its history, this achievement cannot hide reality: the influence of Africa in decision -making within the WTO remains marginal”.
The share of Africa in world trade also remains, he added, “very low”, not exceeding 3 %. An “insignificant” rate, to see the potential of the continent, in particular with regard to the resources at its disposal and which represent 30 % of the world’s natural resources.
The African continent is also injured with regard to Africa in the flow of global investments, not exceeding $ 94 billion a year, “the weakest share in the world”, according to the president who wanted to raise another weak point on the continent, that of the low level of intra-African trade. This rate “remains limited to 15 % against 60 % for intra-European exchanges, a situation that deprives, pointed out the president,” our savings of important opportunities for growth and job creation for our young people “.
The president also reported “a deep lack of transport, energy, communication and financing infrastructure” from which the African continent suffers.
The pivotal role of Algeria in the development of the continent
This situation “should not start our determination, but constitute an additional motivation to mobilize our collective capacities and transform our continental reality into success in terms of development”, according to the president. He highlighted the role of Algeria, which mobilizes his efforts to meet the challenge, he said, through the launch of several structuring projects that benefit the African continent. These include, among other things, the trans -Saharan road, the gas pipeline A gas pipeline is a pipeline intended for the transport of gasoline materials under pressure, most of the time hydrocarbons. Depending on their nature of use, gas pipelines can be classified as three main families: 1- Collection pipelinesbringing the gas out of the deposits or underground storage to treatment sites. 2- transportation or transit, transporting under high pressure the treated gas (dehydrated, desulfurée, …) at the doors of urban areas or industrial consumption sites 3- Distribution pipelinesdistributing low -pressure gas as close as possible to domestic consumers or small industries. Connecting Algeria and Nigeria (TSGP) as well as the trans -Saharan dorsal project with fiber optic which strengthens digital sovereignty, in addition to the launch of air and sea links between African capitals, the opening of Algerian banks branches in different African countries, as well as the creation of frank areas with five countries in the continent.
Saying the fact that “Africa represents the future and that it is a young continent, unlike other continents that have entered an aging phase”, the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, did not fail to evoke the role of Algeria in the enhancement of human resources. “Algeria offers 8,000 scholarships annually to Africans,” he said, stressing the training of no less than 65,000 African executives, since the independence of the country.
At the end of the day, the President of the Republic went to the Palais des Expositions des Pins-Maritimes, at Safex, where he visited the various stands of the intra-African trade fair. He was accompanied by the acting Prime Minister, Sifi Ghrieb, members of the government and senior state officials, as well as the president of the IATF Advisory Council, the former president of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo, the Fair Commissioner, Lartrèche Larbi, and representatives of the diplomatic corps accredited in Algeria. On this occasion, the Head of State visited the stands of national and private companies, start-ups and African institutions and organizations, as well as that of the African Union.
