The Algerian national football selection took an additional step towards qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, by beating Botswana (3-1, half: 1-1), Thursday evening at the Hocine Aït Ahmed stadium in Tizi-Ouzou, on behalf of the 7th day of the G group of the Africa area.
The Greens, sometimes feverish in defense, were able to count on the offensive talent of Mohamed Amine Amine (33rd) and the realism of Baghdad Bounedjah, author of a double (72nd, 90+6), to pocket a sixth victory in seven days.
Thanks to this new success, Algeria now totals 18 points and consolidates its first place in the group, approaching a little more from the 2026 World Cup, jointly organized by the United States, Mexico and Canada.
Dominators at the start of the match, Vladimir Petkovic’s men, however, showed a lack of efficiency. A rapid combination between Gouiri, Aouar and Bensebaïni (10th) could have led to the opening of the score, but the ball escaped the Algerian defender. The opening was finally intervened in the 33rd minute thanks to Amoura, well served by Ramy Bensebaïni.
But the joy was short -lived. Shortly before the break (43rd), Kopelang took advantage of a stopped kick to put the two teams on a par, revealing a certain defensive fragility of the Algerian block. At halftime, the two teams were back to back (1-1).
On the return from the locker room, the national coach made several offensive changes, with the entry of Benrahma, Belaïli and Bounedjah. A paid choice since the Al-Shamal SC striker gave his own advantage in the 72nd minute, on a decisive pass from Amoura. At the end of the game, despite some defensive scares, the Greens definitively sealed the victory by Bounedjah (90+6), served by Belaïli.
Thanks to this success, Algeria keeps the stranglehold on group G and is seriously closer to the qualification for the World-2026, before its next trip to face Guinea as part of the 8th day of qualifications in the Africa zone.
The other two games in group G, scheduled for Friday, will take Somalia (1 point) to Guinea (7 points) from 1:00 p.m. (Algerian hours) and Uganda (9 pts) in Mozambique (12 points) from 5:00 p.m.
During the eighth day of group G of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, scheduled for September 7, 8 and 9, Algeria will travel to Casablanca to face Guinea, while Mozambique will host Botswana. The third match will take Uganda to Somalia.
As a reminder, the first of the nine groups will qualify directly for the final phase of the 2026 World Cup, while the best four seconds will play a dam tournament organized by the African Football Confederation (CAF) whose winner will access the intercontinental dams organized by FIFA.
