The Minister of State, Minister of Energy, Mines and Renewable Energies, Mr. Mohamed Arkab, received, Sunday, the Minister of Commerce, Industry and Competition of South Africa, Mr. Parks Tau, visiting Algeria to participate in the 4th edition of the intra-African trade fair (IATF 2025), which is held from September 4 to 10, according to a ministry.
This meeting took place at the headquarters of the ministry, in the presence of the ambassador of the Republic of South Africa to Algeria, the CEO of the Sonatrach group, Mr. Rachid Hachichi, as well as executives of the ministry, according to the same source.
During these interviews, the two parties examined the means of strengthening cooperation between Algeria and South Africa in the fields of energy, mines and renewable energies, highlighting the “historical nature and solidity” of bilateral relations.
The meeting made it possible to examine the perspectives of cooperation in the field of hydrocarbons throughout the value chain, as well as in the field of research, exploration and transformation of mining resources, in particular critical and strategic metals which are “essential in industries linked to renewable energies”.
The interviews also focused on investment opportunities, the exchange of expertise between the two countries in this sector and the means of expanding cooperation in the fields of electricity and the production of equipment.
In terms of renewable energies, the two parties highlighted the need to develop photovoltaic solar energy projects, wind energy, energy storage and green hydrogen, as part of the initiative of the African Green Hydrogen Alliance (AGHA) presided that South Africa and which aims to federate African efforts to develop this promising energy resource.
In this context, the two parties reiterated their commitment to consolidate the bilateral partnership and to hoist it at higher levels, in realization of the conclusions of the State visit carried out, in December 2024 in Algeria, by the President of the Republic of South Africa, Mr. Cyril Ramaphosa, at the invitation of the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
After having underlined “the capital importance” of strengthening cooperation with South Africa, Mr. Arkab highlighted the great potentials offered by the energy sector, mines and renewable energies in Algeria, in particular thanks to new legal and regulatory frameworks which ensure an attractive investment climate, inviting South African companies to seize these priority investment opportunities.
