French Prime Minister François Bayrou and his minority government failed after a crucial vote of confidence in Parliament on Monday.
In detail, 364 deputies pronounced against, 194 for, when 25 elected officials chose abstention.
Bayrou, appointed less than a year ago after the ouster of the conservative politician and former Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier, lost his bet after having summoned an unprecedented vote of confidence on his controversial budgetary plan for 2026.
French President Emmanuel Macron is now forced to seek the fifth Prime Minister since the start of his second term in 2022, a Prime Minister who would be able to have a budget adopted within a fragmented French Parliament.
Macron “takes note” of the fall of the government, overthrown by the National Assembly, and “will appoint a new Prime Minister in the next few days”, according to the press release from the French presidency.
Bayrou will be received by Macron this Tuesday to restore his resignation.
