The work of the wastewater treatment plant and the amended manifold, located in the locality of Chetba, commune of Oued-Ghir, is stopped. Launched at the end of 2024, this structuring project, initiated by the National Sanitation Office (ONA), has now been suspended since the beginning of August.
With a processing capacity estimated at 200,000 accommodation equivalents (EQ/H), the station only reached a progress rate of 13%.
According to the president of the People’s Assembly of Wilaya (APW), Bachir Barket, who spoke after a field visit made in the presence of several local and central officials, the site is today faced with a deep revision of the initial technical study.
The P/APW stressed that “a good part of the 500 employees mobilized for the realization of this STEP, intended in particular to treat wastewater discharges from a part of the municipalities of Béjaïa, Oued-Ghir, in particular the new urban pole Cheikh el-Mokrani (IGHZER OUZARIF), as well as TALA HAMZA, are no longer on the premises”.
According to the same official, “an additional study was recently carried out and recommended a deepening of the 40 -meter structure”. A second expertise, namely an arbitration study, came to confirm these recommendations. This implies, however, a budget extension estimated at 300 billion cents, in addition to the 460 billion already allocated to the project.
Faced with this situation, Mr. Barket called on the central authorities to “intervene urgently” in order to unlock the project. Two options are possible, according to him, namely “to identify a new field without legal constraints or financially take charge of the additional cost generated by new technical studies”.
As a reminder, this infrastructure aims to improve wastewater management in the region, protect the environment by reducing pollution from Soummam wadi, and reuse the water treated for agricultural irrigation.
Concerning the disturbances recently recorded in the drinking water supply in several districts of the city of Béjaïa and its surroundings, disturbances due, in part, to the tests linked to the commissioning of the seawater desalination station, Mr. Barket said: “The officials concerned, including that of the Algerian Water (ADE), gave guarantees that the water supply will be restored as soon as possible. These insurances were given after a visit to the desalked water connection center, located in the town of Timezrit.
