The government is getting into the task.
The question of the promotion of cement and clinker exports, in particular through the development of ports dedicated to this purpose, was on the agenda of an inter -ministerial meeting on Thursday, chaired by the Prime Minister, Sifi Ghrieb. The point was made on the capacities available to the country in this area and measures were immediately taken to support this dynamic.
The Government sets out on the task one week after the instructions of the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, relating to the need to “promote exports, in particular through the development of dedicated ports for the export of cement and clinker”, said a press release from the primary ministry.
The meeting was held in the presence of all stakeholders, namely the ministers responsible for finance, foreign trade and the promotion of exports, public works and transport, the governor of the Bank of Algeria and the economic operators activating in the field of cement export.
The meeting made it possible to follow presentations on the state of infrastructure at the ports concerned by export operations and to listen to the concerns and proposals of the economic operators present. Following this, “a series of concrete and immediate measures were taken to support the export of short -term cement and clinker, in particular through the rationalization of the exploitation of available infrastructure, in order to increase their storage capacities and control logistics costs”, according to the same source.
It was also an opportunity, it has been reported, to examine proposals aimed at ensuring better availability of products intended for medium-term export, in particular in the light of important investments in the matter which should come into service soon.
The President of the Republic expressed, let us remember, on the occasion of the opening of the 4e Edition of the intra-African trade fair (IATF 2025), its wish that Algeria has a port dedicated to the export of cement. A port that should be chosen from the existing infrastructure, but suitable to include a docking arm towards the deep areas, capable of receiving large ships. The president also suggested the use of the rental of floating silos, in order to facilitate the storage and boarding of the cement intended for export. The objective is to eliminate current logistical constraints which slow down export performance.
A measure which is in line with the strategy of the public authorities, relating to the diversification of exports. Algeria is considered an important exporter of cement and clinker. Algerian cement exports are constantly increasing. They reached $ 747 million in 2023, while the country is considered the second world exporter of clinker. A result obtained thanks to the increase in production capacities.
