«Le secteur de la communication est stratégique et vital» – Le Jeune Indépendant


Freshly appointed Minister of Communication, Zoheir Bouamama, officially took office this Monday, during the passing ceremony organized with his predecessor, Mohamed Meziane. In his speech, the new manager sketched the main axes of his action, placing the information sector to the rank of “absolute priority” for the President of the Republic.

Bouamama said that the communication sector is “an essential and strategic pillar in the service of the nation”. Speaking during the passing ceremony with his predecessor Mohamed Meziane, he stressed that this department faces “major challenges and profound changes”, both national and internationally and that he carries a “considerable issue” for the future of the country.

Aware of the heavy task that awaits him, the minister said that “failure is not an option” and that he undertakes to “preserve the achievements while providing improvements”. He promised to work “more, better and in an intelligent and effective way” in order to hoist the media field up to the ambitions of new Algeria.

The new minister also reiterated his attachment to press freedom, but in compliance with national constants, announcing the start of a “national charter of professional ethics”. This initiative should meet a recurring demand from professionals in the sector and offer a common ethical framework. In addition, Bouamama pleaded for a revision of the role and functioning of the regulatory authority, “a legitimate expectation of the media family”.

Another central component of its program, that of training and adaptation to technological developments. The Minister intends to emphasize new trades related to digital and artificial intelligence, essential to bring the Algerian media landscape into a new era.

Bouamama assured that “the doors of the ministry will remain open” in order to build “a favorable media climate”. He also promised to mobilize all means to strengthen the place of information and promote press freedom in the context of respect for national constants.

Finally, he insisted on the need to replace the citizen “at the center of the communication process”, thanks to field work and better proximity between the media and society. Concluding that “I undertake to restore the profession of journalist all its dignity and its central role”, he called on all professionals to unite their efforts to meet the challenges and concretize the development of the profession.
