l’UE et le PAM réaffirment leur solidarité envers les réfugiés – Le Jeune Indépendant

Solidarity with Sahrawi refugees was reaffirmed this Tuesday in Algiers, during a joint event organized by the European Union delegation (EU) in Algeria and the World Food Program (PAM). This meeting highlighted the major role assumed by Algeria for several decades, as well as the constant support of international partners, in support of the refugees installed in the Tindouf camps.

The European Union ambassador to Algeria, Diego Mellado Pascua, recalled that the EU recently transferred a contribution of 5 million euros as part of the second year of the multi -year partnership. This aid, according to him, reflects the commitment of Europeans to the Sahrawi people, while emphasizing the “generosity of Algeria” in the reception of refugees for several years.

For her part, the representative and Director of PAM in Algeria, Aline Rumonge, highlighted the leading support played by Algiers. “For more than 50 years, Algeria has shown exemplary generosity by welcoming Saharawi refugees,” she said. She added that for almost 40 years, WFP has been by their side to “provide vital food and nutritional assistance,” she also underlined.

In this regard, the President of the Red Crescent of the Arab Republic of Democratic Sahrawi (RASD), Yahia Bouhbini, took this opportunity to launch an appeal to donors, inviting them to “make their contributions in order to support the Sahrawi refugees”.

In the same spirit, Ms. Rumonge also recalled that 80 % of Saharawi refugees fully depend on humanitarian aid, while saluting the constant support of the EU. It insisted that this “solid and reliable” partnership guarantees sustainable funding, essential to “provide vital assistance while improving the efficiency of PAM operations in Tindouf camps”.
