Back to school 2025: Civil protection ensures the safety of students

Back to school like no other.

On the occasion of the start of the 2025-2026 school year, the Directorate General for Civil Protection announced, this Wednesday, the launch of a national awareness campaign for the prevention of road accidents on the journey between the home and the school. This initiative is part of the annual awareness and prevention activity plan for the current year. This was indicated by a press release from civil protection.

Launched under the watchword “The security of our children … Our responsibility to all”, the initiative aims to arouse the vigilance of students and their parents in the face of road accidents incurred during school trips. To this end, civil protection officials insisted on the central role of parents, considered, according to them, as the essential link in the education of their children on this subject. “Children often lack vigilance in the face of the dangers of the public road,” they said, stressing that the risks appear from the age of three, increase at six years, when the child begins to go alone to school, and reach their climax around 11 or 12 years

In this context, civil protection recommended that parents of students respect a set of instructions, highlighting the imperative need to make their children aware of the road safety rules, especially during journeys to school:

She first invites them to accompany their children during the first days of class in order to get them used to choosing the safest route between the house and the school. They must, moreover, teach their children to favor the use of pedestrian passages and, in the event of absence, to cross in a clear location, clearly visible on both sides of the drivers. Parents must also instill in their children the reflex to remain vigilant even on a pedestrian crossing, to look on the left, to the right then to the left before crossing and not committing only after the complete stop of the vehicles.

Civil protection recommends, moreover, to parents to teach their children to cross calmly, walking and without running, just to avoid any fall on the road. She also invites them to get them used to walking regularly, to develop their consciousness of road safety, especially on the way to school.

In addition, it is essential to teach the youngest to clearly distinguish the play areas from vehicle traffic areas and walk on the sidewalk on the side of homes. Finally, parents are invited to make their children aware of the potential dangers of the road, such as garages outings, sites or unfavorable climatic conditions such as rain or snow.

In parallel, an operational system has been put in place to strengthen the presence of civil protection teams around schools, still according to the same source. The objective is “to support students and ensure a quick response to distress calls,” concluded the press release.
