Next meeting of the Security Council on the question of Western Sahara

As part of the preparation of the meeting of the Security Council on the question of Western Sahara scheduled for next October, the Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, the National Community abroad and African Affairs, Ahmed Attaf received, Tuesday evening, the personal envoy of the United Nations Secretary General for Western Sahara, staff of Mistura, on an official visit to Algeria. A statement from the ministry said that the personal envoy should present to the Security Council a report on his efforts to implement the mandate entrusted to him.
In this regard, the Minister of State reaffirmed “the support of Algeria to the efforts of the Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, and his personal envoy, staff of Mistura, in order to achieve a just, sustainable and definitive solution to the question of Western Sahara, guaranteeing the Sahraoui people his inalienable right and imprescriptable to self -determination, in accordance with the relevant resolutions of nations united, ”adds the same source. Ahmed Attaf also mentioned “the central and essential role of the UN”, considering “necessary to place under its aegis all the steps and initiatives aimed at organizing direct and without prior condition between the two parties to the conflict, namely the Kingdom of Morocco and the Polisario Front”.
In conclusion, the Minister of State reaffirmed “the attachment of Algeria to the need to promote the UN doctrine devoted in the field of decolonization, welcoming the role of the United Nations mission for the organization of a referendum in Western Sahara (Minurso), as one of the forms of the commitment of the international community in favor of decolonization in Western Sahara, African ”, according to the press release.
In addition, the delegation of the European Union in Algeria and the World Food Program (PAM) praised the role of Algeria on Tuesday in the management of the needs of Sahrawi refugees in the Tindouf camps.
“For more than 50 years, Algeria has shown exemplary generosity by welcoming Saharawi refugees, and for almost 40 years the WFP has been by its side, providing vital food and nutritional assistance,” said PAM representative and director of PAM in Algeria, Aline Rumonge during an event intended to reaffirm the commitment of the EU in Algeria Sahraouis by continuing its funding to the UN agency.
Stressing that 80% of Sahrawi refugees depend entirely on humanitarian aid, it also praised the unwavering support of the EU and its commitment to this population, noting that their “solid and reliable partnership provides the lasting funding necessary to provide vital assistance while improving the efficiency of WFP operations”.
For his part, the Ambassador of the European Union (EU) in Algeria, Diego Mellado Pascua has also focused on the generosity of Algeria in favor of Sahraouis refugees for several years, while making a few weeks ago the EU transmitted the European contribution of the order of 5 million euros – under the second year of the multi -year partnership – to recall the commitment of the Europeans Sahraoui.
The President of the Red Crescent of the Arab Republic of Democratic Sahrawi (RASD), Yahia Bouhbini, for her part, indicated in a declaration to the APS that the event of the day was an opportunity to launch an appeal to all donors to make contributions in favor of Sahrais refugees.
The place of Western Sahara within the African Union was recently reinforced by the participation of the Arab Republic of Democratic Sahrawi (RASD) in the 4th edition of the intra-African trade fair (IATF- 2025), which was held in Algiers from September 4 to 10, 2025. This is confirmed by the Sahraoui Minister of Trade, Ahmed Bachri Omar, Interview, “that the Sahrawi State is an irreversible African reality”.
“This participation in such a continental event reflects the serious commitment of the RASD to move forward in the achievement of the objectives of the African Union (AU),” he said, adding that “the fair has constituted an important showcase to make the Sahrawi cause known to African and non-African participants”.
