A scientific day on rage was held on Thursday at the Médéa main library, as part of the celebration of the International Day to Combat this disease, and on the instruction of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries.
Placed under the slogan “Me, you and the company, take measures”, the meeting brought together representatives of the Ministry of Health and Population, central veterinary services, the Pasteur Institute, as well as national and international organizations.
Ms. Samia Hamadi, representative of the Ministry of Health and the Population, recalled that the objective is to reach zero death by human rage by 2030. To this end, Algeria has launched an ambitious project to fight this zoonosis, aimed at intensifying the vaccination campaigns of domestic and errant dogs, main vectors of the disease. This approach is based on the implementation of a national strategic plan whose purpose is to eradicate the cases of human rage in the coming years.
For her part, the representative of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr Leïla Ramdani, announced the launch of the Rabtool project, in collaboration with the World Animal Health Organization (OMSA). This program, entitled “Tools for the implementation of a harmonized program to combat canine rage in the North African region”, was presented and debated during an international workshop bringing together the actors involved in the fight against this pathology.
According to the same speaker, the scientific day also made it possible to present the national multisectoral plan to combat rabies, the third of its kind in Africa and the first in North Africa, described as “qualitative leap” in the care of this disease.
Invited to this meeting, the Italian expert, Dr Paola Debendigt, insisted on the need to massively vaccinate dogs and inform the population about the risks linked to rage. She also highlighted the importance of the management of stray dogs. To achieve the objective of 2030, she recommended the eradication of waste deposits, real places of proliferation of stray dogs and other carnivores, the periodic launch of operations to regulate these canine populations, the strict respect for the vaccine obligation of domestic carnivores, as well as the creation of suitable canine stoves.
