For sustainable tourism development.
Each year, on September 27, World Tourism Day, established by the World Tourism Organization (OMT), highlights the challenges of an in full change sector. For the 2025 edition, placed under the theme “Tourism and sustainable transition”, the Minister of Tourism and Crafts, Houria Meddahi, welcomed the actors of the sector this Saturday and reiterated Algeria’s commitment to sustainable tourism development.
In her speech, the Minister stressed that Algeria, like many countries in the world, celebrates this day by recognizing the central place of tourism as a force for positive change. In this sense, it has indicated that this sector is an essential lever to promote more sustainable and innovative practices, thanks to its ability to create jobs, to energize the local economy, to strengthen the links between communities and cultures, while contributing to the preservation of traditions.
In this perspective, she described this privileged day of time to renew collective engagement in favor of “development of this vital sector and to strengthen its role as a major economic and cultural in the process of sustainable development”, she hammered.
In this wake, she also said that the state aspires to make tourism a sustainable economic and social development engine. As such, Meddahi has declared that the country is resolutely part of the sustainable tourism approach, by focusing on the support and empowerment of the various fringes of the company, considered as a key foundation to build a responsible future.
In addition, the Minister said that the State pays particular attention to investment in human capital, through its training and integration in various sectors, including tourism.
In this sense, it has added that Algeria relies on the support of tourism projects to make it a locomotive of local development and an engine of employment, through a favorable environment which includes financing mechanisms, the creation and monitoring of incubators, the establishment of partnerships with international organizations, the promotion of innovation and technologies, as well as the regular organization of fairs intended for companies and project leaders.
According to the Minister, the valuation of the country’s tourist potential involves strengthening infrastructure and promoting sustainable investment. She then clarified that this approach aims to highlight the characteristics of authentic and ancestral tourism, adapted to current requirements, while preserving Algerian foundations and authenticity.
In the same vein, the Minister noted that environmental, social and cultural issues require the adoption of responsible practices, based on rational management of tourism resources and the reduction of their negative impacts. As such, it has cited the development of sustainable infrastructure and international awareness of the importance of tourism.
Meddahi concluded its speech by inviting all partners, whether from tourist institutions or the investment sector, to perceive Algeria as an original destination and to contribute to the construction of responsible and sustainable tourism, in the service of man and the environment. She said, on this occasion, that Algeria will remain open to the world, carried by its civilization, its authenticity and its promising future prospects.
