On October 25, Algeria is preparing to take on a major ecological challenge which consists of planting a million trees in a single day. This vast reforestation operation, the largest ever organized in the country, aims to strengthen the national plant cover and actively contribute to the fight against climate change.
The initiative, announced by the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Yacine Oualid, will be carried out under the supervision of the ministry he heads and the General Directorate of Forests. It is based on a partnership with the Algérie Verte association led by ecologist Fouad Maala.
Deployed simultaneously in the 58 wilayas, the campaign plans to plant one million plants carefully chosen according to the specificities of each region. This targeted selection must guarantee better adaptation and sustainable growth of the trees.
The Minister of Agriculture insisted on the inclusive nature of the operation, open not only to public institutions, but also to citizens, associations, businesses and families.
Fouad Maala, for his part, called on all stakeholders in society to actively participate in this collective action, for which he expects a success rate of 100%, thanks to the means mobilized to ensure its smooth running.
Maala is also at the origin of the Al Djazair Al Khadra (Green Algeria) project, launched in 2013. This citizen initiative encourages the planting of millions of trees and the extension of green spaces through individual and community actions.
The Al Djazair Al Khadra association, currently followed by more than two million people, has its own nursery, but it also collects trees from donors. Social networks have largely contributed to popularizing this movement, bringing together associations and citizens over the years around reforestation campaigns across the country.
After the damage caused by forest fires in several wilayas of the country in 2023, the founder of the association also launched a major campaign, on social networks, called “Khadra biidni Allah” (Green with the will of God), to raise awareness and bring about a reforestation process.
In this context, the initiative of October 25 was strongly supported by state institutions, the Ministry of Vocational Training and Education announced its full participation in this vast environmental initiative. All training institutions spread across the 58 wilayas will take part in tree planting operations and organize awareness and volunteering activities. Trainees, teachers as well as managers will be mobilized, thus highlighting the central role of the vocational training sector in promoting a culture of sustainable development and environmental protection.
For its part, the National Observatory of Civil Society announced, in coordination with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, that more than 2,500 associations will participate in this campaign, with the objective of planting more than a million trees across the national territory.
This campaign aims to spread a true plantation culture and preserve the country’s forest wealth, while anchoring the values of environmental citizenship and collective responsibility. It is fully in line with national efforts in favor of sustainable development and environmental protection. Through this initiative, the Observatory reaffirms the essential role of civil society as a key partner in the realization of national projects with an ecological dimension.
