Establish a modern digital environment.
The Minister of Internal Trade and National Market Regulation, Amel Abdelatif, affirmed that commercial activity is experiencing a real transformation and notable growth, becoming a digital experience that links the merchant to the consumer, highlighting Algeria’s strategy, particularly the Department of Commerce in this area, which aims to establish a modern digital environment, and this by encouraging the emergence of new ideas capable of offering the opportunity to launch commercial projects via the internet.
In the presence of the Minister of the Knowledge Economy, Start-ups and Microenterprises, the Minister of Post and Telecommunications and the High Commissioner for Digitalization, the Minister of Internal Trade and National Market Regulation gave, this Wednesday at Safex (Algiers), the kick-off of the 4e edition of the “ECSEL EXPO” e-commerce and online services exhibition, marked by the participation of more than 250 exhibitors.
The strategy of the Department of Internal Trade aimed at the development of e-commerce was presented by the minister. “The Ministry of Internal Trade is working to establish a modern digital environment that encourages innovative ideas and allows young people to launch their business projects online, thus helping to create real added value for our national economy,” said Amel Abdelatif.
A strategy that results in a set of measures. This involves, according to the minister’s explanations, updating the legal framework governing electronic commerce, raising awareness and encouraging merchants to use electronic payment solutions, digitizing commercial and administrative services capable of simplifying procedures and facilitating the registration of activities and obtaining the trade register via online platforms. She also pointed out that the ministry is working to supervise the development of electronic commerce so that it is “organized and responsible”, thus avoiding the emergence of parallel activities outside the legal framework.
Signaling a revolution in the world of commerce, which is now an integrated digital experience connecting the merchant to the consumer through modern platforms, the minister said the vision for the domestic commerce sector is clear. It is based, among other things, on digitalization based on trust, knowledge and transparency, an organized market, guaranteeing the balance between freedom of enterprise and consumer protection and economic and financial inclusion, through the integration of parallel commercial activities into the national economy.
Furthermore, the efforts of the department she heads aimed at promoting the adoption of electronic payment as “a safe and practical option” and gradually reducing dependence on cash payment in commercial transactions were highlighted by the minister who said that “this method of payment promotes transparency, facilitates the monitoring of digital operations and is based on the principles of trust, clarity and consumer protection”, thus allowing the strengthening of credibility of electronic commerce.
Regarding this e-commerce and online services fair, Ms. Abdelatif underlined the importance of this major economic and digital event which “is an annual meeting bringing together innovation, entrepreneurship and digital transformation in the e-commerce and services sector.” According to her, this meeting illustrates the profound change that Algeria is experiencing in the field of digitalization, in perfect harmony with the strategic orientations of the President of the Republic aimed at building a diversified, modern economy based on knowledge and technology.
For his part, the founder of this Show, Chemseddine Habhoub, welcomed the position that this Show now occupies, which will bring together, for four days, all the players in the ecosystem. During his appearance yesterday on National Radio, he noted the participation of all stakeholders, offering services enabling the existence of e-retailers such as logistics companies that do storage, packaging, management software, payment solutions, cybersecurity, internet service providers, banks, insurance, as well as state institutions such as the DGI (Directorate General of Taxes) and the National Self-Employment Agency. It should be remembered that e-commerce has recorded notable growth in recent years, reaching transactions of $1.9 billion by the end of 2024.
