Algerian zellige won a prestigious award at the 2025 Osaka World Expo, an international event that highlights innovations in various fields through the participation of hundreds of countries. This distinction was awarded in the “Best Exterior Design” category of the competition, highlighting traditional Algerian craftsmanship on a global scale. Zellige is a traditional art form that dates back centuries in Algeria. Made up of small pieces of ceramic, this decorative coating is often used in architecture to adorn walls, floors and fountains. It is characterized by intricate geometric patterns and vibrant colors, representing a central element of the country’s cultural heritage. As part of the Osaka 2025 World Expo, Algeria has chosen to highlight this ancient know-how through the design of its pavilion. The design of the pavilion, inspired by traditional zellige patterns, was appreciated for its refinement and its respect for artisanal techniques while integrating modern elements which have captured the attention of visitors from around the world.
A silver medal for Algerian zellige
The Osaka World Expo 2025 welcomed 167 countries, each showcasing their own cultural heritage, innovations and artistic creations. Among the multiple participants, Algeria was rewarded for its exterior design, with a silver medal awarded specifically for Zellige. This prize was awarded during an official ceremony in the presence of representatives of several participating nations. The central element of the award-winning design was an assemblage of zellige pieces, carefully arranged to create a unique visual effect and symbolize Algeria’s cultural heritage. This choice of representation made it possible to highlight not only the art of zellige, but also its influence in contemporary architecture and its key role in global cultural dialogue. The project for this pavilion was supervised by craftsmen and designers specializing in the art of zellige, with a particular effort to preserve traditional manufacturing methods while integrating innovative aspects which appealed to the competition jury.
The importance of international recognition
The silver medal obtained by Algerian zellige at the Osaka 2025 Universal Exhibition represents important recognition for Algerian craftsmanship on the international scene. This award highlights the country’s rich cultural heritage, and provides a global platform to promote artisanal traditions that are often little known on a global scale.
