President Abdelmadjid Tebboune paid tribute last Thursday to the martyrs of the demonstrations of October 17, 1961 in Paris, denouncing the brutal repression of the colonial forces and saluting the Algerian diaspora, a symbol of loyalty and commitment, on the occasion of the 64th anniversary of this tragic page in national history.
In his message, the Head of State recalls the historical importance of October 17, where “we revive the memory of a day engraved in the national memory, testifying to the commitment of Algerian emigrants in favor of the glorious revolution of liberation which, after seven years of armed struggle, had established itself as an epic of emancipation, an epic which drained, through the scale and resonance of its revolutionary momentum, the support of the freedom-loving peoples through the world in favor of a people in struggle, determined to change the course of colonial history and to free themselves from its yoke and its tyranny, at the cost of heavy sacrifices.
President Tebboune affirmed that “the noose which tightened on a colonizer surrounded by the legitimacy of the struggle and the justness of the cause plunged him, at this stage of History, into hysteria, when the Parisian police, under the orders of the police prefect at the time, Maurice Papon, imposed an arbitrary curfew on members of the Algerian community. His arrogance threw him into the abyss of crime and savage repression, attacking peaceful crowds out to demonstrate, which ended in a tragic outcome, with demonstrators drowned in the Seine and others brutalized, tortured and transferred to camps. The memory of these sacrifices made by the children of the community remains forever engraved in our minds.”
On this day of remembrance, the President wanted to pay tribute to the memory of national activists abroad during the war of liberation and to that of the valiant martyrs of this repression. He sent his greetings to the members of the diaspora: “The children of our national community across the world carry love and loyalty to Algeria in their hearts, and honor their commitment by participating in the dynamics of the economic transformations underway in the country, driven by the desire to take part in the process of national renewal and construction of the modern national state to which the brave Algerian people aspire. »
Closing his message, the President of the Republic launched a vibrant tribute to the martyrs: “Long live Algeria! Glory and eternity to our valiant martyrs.”
The Head of State also observed, at the headquarters of the Presidency of the Republic, a minute of silence in the presence of senior state executives, in memory of the chouhada and on the occasion of National Emigration Day, which commemorates the anniversary of the demonstrations of October 17, 1961.
On the same day, the President also received the moudjahida Djamila Bouhired, symbol of the struggle for independence and historical figure of the Algerian resistance, in recognition of her commitment to the service of the nation.
