New diplomatic and political victory for the Sahrawis. A few days before a debate on the Sahrawi question at the United Nations, and probably an adoption of a resolution on the UN mission, Minurso, the Non-Aligned Movement (MNA) has, once again, expressed its firm support for the Sahrawi people and their inalienable right to self-determination.
This position, in line with the traditional line of the Movement, was recalled in the final document which sanctioned the work of the 19th ministerial meeting, which took place on October 15 and 16 in Kampala, Uganda.
The MNA stressed the need to continue the efforts undertaken by the Secretary General of the United Nations and his personal envoy to achieve a just and lasting political solution to the Western Sahara conflict. This solution must guarantee the Sahrawi people the possibility of freely choosing their future, in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations and General Assembly Resolution 1514 on decolonization, according to the terms of the text.
The member countries of the Movement also recalled the responsibility of the UN in leading the process of decolonization of the territory. They called for strengthening the organization’s role in supervising negotiations between the two conflicting parties, in order to ensure respect for international law and the full application of the principle of self-determination.
With this new reaffirmation, the Non-Aligned Movement confirms its historic solidarity with the Sahrawi people and its commitment to defending the causes of liberation and sovereignty of peoples still subject to colonization, despite the shenanigans of the Moroccan occupier and its propagandist policy.
Furthermore, the Fourth Committee of the UN General Assembly, responsible for decolonization and special political issues, adopted an important resolution last Thursday reaffirming the legal status of Western Sahara as a non-self-governing territory subject to the decolonization process.
The resolution, adopted without a vote during the 80th session of the commission, underlines that the question of Western Sahara remains above all a matter of decolonization, reiterating the inalienable right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination and independence, in accordance with the United Nations Charter and General Assembly resolution 1514 (XV) on the granting of independence to colonized countries and peoples.
The committee also recalled previous resolutions of the General Assembly and the Security Council, in particular resolution 690 (1991) having established the United Nations Mission for the organization of a referendum in Western Sahara (Minurso). She also took note of the report of the UN Secretary General dated July 31, 2025, confirming that the question of Western Sahara is treated, within the UN bodies, as a question of decolonization.
In the same text, the Fourth Committee reaffirmed the responsibility of the UN towards the Sahrawi people, while asking the Special Committee on Decolonization (C24) to continue examining the situation in Western Sahara and present a detailed report at the next session of the General Assembly. The Secretary General is also invited to submit a report on the implementation of this resolution to the 81st session.
