A new Polish economic mission traveled to Algeria, on the occasion of the Algerian-Polish economic meetings, organized this Tuesday in Algiers, with a view to discussing and seeking new partnership opportunities in various sectors of activity, mainly that of agriculture and agri-food, which presents itself as a promising sector.
The Algerian-Polish economic partnership is expected to develop taking into account the potential, but above all the common desire to give new impetus to this cooperation. A desire expressed yesterday on the occasion of the Polish-Algerian day, organized at the El-Aurassi hotel, with the participation of Polish and Algerian companies.
The Polish ambassador to Algeria, Krzysztof Kopytko, expressed this desire to strengthen the economic partnership, highlighting the place occupied by Algeria. “Algeria is our key partner in North Africa. The country offers several opportunities in various fields,” he said in a statement to the press, noting the presence, as part of this economic mission, of companies carrying out investment projects, without giving further details.
“This mission includes companies that represent the agriculture and agri-food sector, which is a very important sector. A driving sector of the economy, but also a guarantor of food security,” he said. Expressing his wish to strengthen win-win bilateral cooperation through this economic mission, the ambassador highlighted the place occupied by his country. “Poland is the 6th European economy and the 20th in the world,” he noted.
The desire to raise the level of cooperation to higher levels was also expressed on the Algerian side. Speaking at the opening of the proceedings, the Director General of Foreign Trade and Export Promotion at the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Export Promotion, Samir Derradji, underlined the ambition to develop bilateral cooperation, which will go beyond a commercial relationship.
“This meeting is an opportunity to open new horizons for the partnership,” he said during this day, which was attended by representatives of the Ministries of Foreign Trade, Internal Trade and Agriculture, as well as the representative of the Algerian Investment Promotion Agency, signaling the dynamic of the economic relationship between the two countries.
Agriculture, a promising investment area
Mr. Derradji also mentioned the promising investment opportunities that Algeria offers, mainly in the sectors of agriculture, construction, renewable energies, processing industries, signaling the availability of the ministry to implement all conditions capable of developing the bilateral partnership. The agricultural sector is in fact identified as promising and likely to attract Polish investment.
The Polish economic mission is made up of companies operating mainly in the agricultural sector and the manufacturing of agricultural equipment, which carry out investment projects. “We have in our delegation companies that want to invest in Algeria, like a company specializing in the storage and drying of cereals,” said Henryk Smolarz, general director of the Polish Agricultural Support Agency (KOWR), affirming that Algeria is a country of great interest to Polish companies.
“Polish investment in Algeria will allow the company to be closer to other African countries,” he noted, signaling the desire of certain companies to come and invest in Algeria, or at least relocate part of their production to Algeria. Underlining the importance of the participation of government institutions and representatives in this event, the CEO of KOWR expressed Poland’s desire to develop a lasting partnership with Algeria.
Checkered trade
B2B meetings between Algerian and Polish economic operators were also organized during this day, which was also an opportunity to present the results of bilateral trade over the last five years. Trade which reached the peak in 2023 with 1.14 billion dollars, but which remains below the existing potential, particularly with regard to Algerian exports.
These trades declined in 2024 to $938.57 million, according to the report presented by the representative of the Ministry of Foreign Trade, Samia Ourabia, who demonstrated a stability of imports during the period 2020-2023, followed by a regression between 2023 and 2024. Exports experienced, for their part, a moderate increase during the period 2020-2023, followed by a regression between 2023 and 2024.
As for the main products traded in 2024, she indicated that Algeria mainly exported to Poland crude petroleum oils, natural calcium phosphate, fertilizers and cements, in addition to certain agricultural products (dates) and agri-food, while the country imported during the same period powdered milk, road tractors for semi-trailers as well as vehicle accessories. Poland is thus ranked, she specified, 14th supplier and 22nd customer of Algeria.
Evolving trade which remains, however, below existing potential, according to the representative of the Ministry of Foreign Trade, who highlighted Algeria’s export potential, noting that dates constitute a product with high potential with a value of 2.1 million dollars.
