Energy cooperation between Algeria and the EU

The Minister of State, Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, underlined, yesterday, Algeria’s desire to consolidate the presence of European companies on its market, through investments in the hydrocarbons and mining resources sectors. Highlighting the legislative and regulatory reforms recently undertaken, offering a more attractive, transparent and flexible framework for foreign investors. “The new laws on investment and hydrocarbons guarantee an attractive, flexible and transparent framework, conducive to the establishment of solid and mutually beneficial partnerships,” he said.

This was, said a press release from the ministry, during a meeting at the headquarters of its ministerial department, with the ambassador of the European Union to Algeria, Diego Mellado, in the presence, noted the same source, of the Secretary of State in charge of Mines, Ms. Karima Bakir Tafer, as well as several executives of the ministry. Stating that the discussions focused on the state and prospects of relations between Algeria and the European Union, particularly within the framework of the strategic dialogue on energy. The meeting, continued the same source, also made it possible to review the progress recorded in energy cooperation, in particular in terms of supplying Europe with natural gas, the development of production fields and the integration of technologies aimed at reducing emissions and the carbon footprint.
The two parties, added the same source, reviewed the advances made in the fields of hydrocarbons and mining, particularly in the supply of natural gas to Europe, the development of energy fields and the reduction of carbon emissions through the adoption of clean technologies and CO₂ capture projects.
Discussions also focused on carbon capture projects, environmental protection and the development of hydrogen as part of the Southern H₂ Corridor, linking Algeria to Europe via Italy, Germany and Austria. This project aims to promote the export of hydrogen and contribute to the continent’s energy transition, we read in this press release.

For his part, Ambassador Diego Mellado expressed the wish to strengthen cooperation in the areas of green and blue hydrogen, as well as in the exploitation and transformation of strategic minerals for the benefit of industries, particularly those linked to renewable energies.
Welcoming, on the occasion, the quality of the energy dialogue between Algeria and the European Union and reaffirming the growing interest of European companies in the Algerian market. He underlined Algeria’s essential role as a reliable partner for European energy security.
