Sport as a pillar of education.
The 2025-2026 school sports competition season officially starts on October 25 in all establishments across the country. Supported by a structured and dynamic national strategy, this program aims to make sport a real pillar of education, by promoting development, inclusion and excellence among students.
This new edition, which will extend until the summer of 2026, marks a major step in the promotion of sport in an educational environment, making school sport a vector of development, citizenship and performance. School sport is, in fact, of capital importance in the overall education of students. Beyond its physical and mental benefits, it promotes discipline, cooperation and team spirit. To do this, the Ministry of National Education, in coordination with that of Youth and Sports, is implementing an ambitious national strategy to fully integrate sport into school life, in accordance with the guidelines of the country’s high authorities.
The Ministry of Education has called, through a framework circular, addressed to school heads to create or reactivate school sports associations, real relays of sporting life within schools. According to this same circular, the 2025-2026 school sports season promises to be rich, progressive and inclusive, with a calendar structured in several successive stages. It will begin with the establishment phase, from October 25 to December 31, marked by the organization of interclass tournaments and the creation of school teams, before continuing with the municipal phase, from January 1 to February 14, 2026, devoted to competitions between public and private establishments.
Then will come the daïra phase, scheduled for March 14 to 31, 2026, which will see the municipal teams compete, followed by the wilaya phase, from April 1 to 16, and the regional phase, from April 18 to 30, 2026, intended to select the best teams from each region. The interregional tournaments will be held from June 15 to 30, 2026 in preparation for the national finals, scheduled for July 2026, on the occasion of Independence and Youth Day.
The program, both diverse and unifying, includes numerous collective and individual disciplines, such as football, handball, basketball, volleyball, athletics, swimming, judo, karate, table tennis and chess, thus offering each student the opportunity to express themselves, surpass themselves and develop a true team spirit.
Particular attention is paid to students with special needs, in order to guarantee inclusive and equitable participation. Physical education inspectors, school principals and school sports associations will be responsible for implementing and monitoring the program. Competitions will take place outside of class hours, notably on Tuesday afternoons, Saturdays and school holidays, in order to preserve the smooth running of lessons.
The ministry also reminds that each participating student must present a medical certificate of fitness, guaranteeing the safety of all. The year 2025-2026 is also distinguished by the increase in the hourly volume devoted to school sport, a measure welcomed by the educational community. For Billel Benzidane, physical education teacher in the middle cycle, “the integration of sport at the heart of the school curriculum requires investing more in infrastructure, teacher training and raising awareness among young people. This is a condition for making sport a driver of success and health.”
Through this initiative, the Ministry of National Education intends to train balanced, disciplined and competitive students, while detecting promising talents who can represent the country in future competitions. School sport thus stands out as a tool of unity, cohesion and excellence, serving ambitious and fulfilled Algerian youth.
