Celebrated every October 16 of the year, World Food Day is an opportunity to take stock of the achievements and challenges to be met in terms of food security, to which the Algerian public authorities attach particular interest, reflected in the strategy adopted. Contributing to food security, sustainable agriculture as well as agroecology, which is the essential approach for its promotion, are now part of the debate.
Agricultural experts and consultants hosted a scientific day on agro-ecology during which they presented the opportunities and constraints of sustainable agriculture as well as the role of agro-ecology.
It was the multipurpose agricultural cooperative and the Tharwa association of Yakouren, in the wilaya of Tizi Ouzou, in coordination with the national association for consumer protection El Aman, which organized this event, during which the need to promote local initiatives, through income-generating activities, in the sense that they contribute to sustainable food security was highlighted.
Speaking on this occasion, Mokrane Nouad, doctor in agri-food sectors, expert and international consultant, highlighted the role of agro-ecology. “To fit in with the slogan of World Food Day for this year ”Hand in hand for better food and a better future”, we proposed a theme linked to this event, namely agro-ecology, generating income,” he indicated, specifying that the work was focused on the artisanal, plant and animal sectors to be implemented locally.
The objective being, according to Mr. Nouad, who is also a founding member of the El Aman association, “to meet the desired goal, namely to provide income to the targeted populations”. The sectors detected, to be promoted with ad hoc support, will, he added, focus on feasible and sustainable projects, in order to contribute to the sustainable economic development of the populations concerned.
The proposed sectors take into account different milestones that intervene in each of them such as raw material resources, first processors, collectors, distributors who promote employment in the manufacturing of products, according to the explanations of this consultant, signaling the subsequent creation of micro-enterprises of processing, distribution, management as part of this structuring to promote the employment of rural women, young people and people with disabilities.
Listing a list of income-generating activities, such as the production of several oils (mastic, prickly pear, myrtle essential oil, etc.), artisanal couscous, pottery, carpet weaving, poultry farming, beekeeping, he estimated that the development of these income-generating activities can contribute to food security.
