Plus d’un million d’arbres plantés !

More than a million trees planted!

For a Green Algeria

Yesterday, Algeria celebrated National Tree Day through a vast operation to plant a million trees spread across the country’s 58 wilayas.

It was the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries, Yacine El Mahdi Oualid, accompanied by the Minister of Youth in charge of the Higher Youth Council, Mustapha Hidaoui, who kicked off the tree planting campaign, from the wilaya of Tizi-Ouzou, more precisely the national cork oak forest Oumalou in the commune of Ait Aggouacha, daïra of Larbaâ Nath Irathen.
This operation, placed under the slogan “Green if God wants it”, which affected all the wilayas of the country, aroused, in Ait Aggouacha, a significant enthusiasm on the part of citizens and civil society organizations, through the planting of a cork oak shrub, a noble species with high economic value.
This site, affected by fires, will be the subject of a cork oak reforestation operation with the planting of 1,360 shrubs in order to rehabilitate this noble and local species.
In a statement to the press on the sidelines of the official launch of the campaign, the Minister of Agriculture expressed his great satisfaction with the scope of this campaign in which millions of Algerians participate. The initial objective of one million trees will be “largely exceeded, given the first figures reaching us from the different wilayas”, underlined the minister, attributing this success to “the spirit of citizen solidarity” and the work of the “Algérie Verte” association, chaired by Fouad Maâlla, recalling the “great importance” given by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to the reforestation operation.
For his part, Mustapha Hidaoui welcomed this “magnificent initiative which highlights the patriotic values of solidarity and mutual aid of the Algerian people”. For him, “today, Algerians are coming together to make Algeria green and flourishing forever,” hoping that this tradition becomes a “tradition that will be perpetuated” to strengthen the values of citizenship. For his part, the president of the “Algérie Verte” association insisted on the need for the perpetuation of this tradition and recalled the importance of regular watering and protection against grazing, a mission which will be undertaken in particular by civil society organizations.
According to the planting program for this day of October 25, more than 25,000 shrubs of various species, selected for their local adaptation, will be planted in Tizi-Ouzou. These include forest and fruit species including a high proportion of cork oak and cedar for the reforestation of burned areas. We also note species such as the wild plum tree, the jujube tree, the fig tree, the olive tree. Ornamental and aromatic species such as acacia, cypress, lime tree and rosemary will also be planted.
The operation will affect the Djurdjura National Park (PND), forest sites, neighborhoods, villages and also in schools and vocational training centers in different municipalities to mark the educational dimension and awareness of this initiative among younger generations.
One million trees, including 130,000 fruit trees, provided by the General Directorate of Forests (DGF), will be planted throughout the national territory, taking into account the specificities and climatic conditions of each region. This vast reforestation campaign, an environmental and civic challenge, is initiated by the Ministry of Agriculture in collaboration with the DGF, in partnership with the “Algérie Verte” association. The main objective is to strengthen the national forest heritage and to fight against desertification and forest fires.
The operation, which takes place over one day, is an example of citizen and institutional mobilization for the preservation of the environment, in line with the national strategy to combat climate change and for the promotion of a green economy.
Note that after the launch of the national planting campaign from the wilaya of Tizi-Ouzou, the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries will supervise the launch of reforestation operations in Bouira and Bordj Bou-Arréridj.
