The Minister of Agriculture, Yacine El-Mahdi Oualid.
It is from the Oumalou forest, in the commune of Aït Aggouacha, daïra of Larbaa n’Ath Irathen, that the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries, Yacine El-Mahdi Oualid, kicked off, this Saturday, the national campaign to plant a million trees, under the slogan “Green, God willing”.
This operation aims to restore the ecosystem and strengthen the plant cover, particularly affected by the forest fires of recent years. The Aït Aggouacha region, severely affected by the fires of summer 2021, constitutes a strong symbol of resilience and renewal.
Alongside the minister, Mustapha Hidaoui, Minister of Youth in charge of the Higher Youth Council, also participated in this ecological action. The mobilization was massive, bringing together soldiers, police, elements of Civil Protection, members of the Algerian Red Crescent, Algerian Muslim Scouts, as well as numerous volunteers and nature lovers. Forest Conservation provided technical supervision to guarantee the success of the plantation.
The wilaya of Tizi Ouzou has for its part been provided with 25,000 plants, while 130,000 fruit trees will be distributed to the wilayas of Tizi Ouzou, Algiers, Bouira and Bordj Bou Arréridj, areas historically affected by fires. Each participant took an active part in planting, using a pickaxe and a hoe, to bring our forests back to life.
The campaign is also being rolled out in other central wilayas. In Bouira, planting is planned in Sour El Ghozlane and along RN 8. In the wilaya of Blida, more than 20,000 shrubs, including 2,700 oaks and chestnut trees, will be planted in the mountainous region of Béni Ali, on the heights of Chréa. In Chlef, 20,000 plants will be distributed across 16 sites, supported by the Algérie Verte association and local volunteers. In the wilaya of Tipasa, 25,000 forest and fruit trees will be planted, including 5,500 at the Sidi Rached technical landfill center, with strong participation from associations and scouts.
The wilaya of Djelfa is mobilizing the population, elements of the National People’s Army and public services to plant 33,000 plants adapted to the local climate on six sites. In Boumerdes, more than 20,000 shrubs will be planted in the “Sahel” forest in Oued El Merdja, while in Bejaïa, 30,000 shrubs will be distributed over around a hundred sites with the participation of volunteers and local associations.
In a statement, Yacine El-Mahdi Oualid stressed that the planned number of one million trees will be largely exceeded thanks to the strong mobilization of citizens and local institutions. For his part, Mustapha Hidaoui described this day as a true “ecological celebration”, welcoming the synergy between ministries and the desire of Algerians to preserve nature and fight against desertification.
The national planting campaign is part of a dynamic of awareness-raising and concrete action, where every citizen, association and institution is called upon to contribute to the restoration and preservation of the country’s forest heritage.
