The Minister of the Interior, Local Authorities and Transport, Said Sayoud, chaired a management meeting devoted to the evaluation of maritime and rail transport of goods, with a view to strengthening the quality of services and supporting national economic dynamics.
During the meeting, the minister discussed the maritime transport of goods, in particular the situation of the fleet belonging to the National Navigation Company (CNAN) and the evolution of its management indicators. In this sense, Mr. Sayoud called for strengthening the efficiency of the company’s management, by ensuring rigorous monitoring of maintenance and rehabilitation work on ships, while evaluating their economic profitability, it is indicated in a press release from the ministry. He also stressed the need to “expand the commercial horizons of the company, in line with the national economic dynamics, and to improve its competitiveness in import-export operations”.
In this context, he called for close coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Trade and regular consultation with economic operators, particularly within the Algerian Council for Economic Renewal (CREA), the same source added. Mr. Sayoud also focused on the modernization of port infrastructure, strengthening the material and logistical means necessary for loading, unloading and storage operations, in order to guarantee “fluidity and flexibility” in the maritime transport chain of goods for foreign trade, while reducing delays and costs.
Furthermore, Mr. Sayoud insisted on the need to quickly correct the malfunctions recorded on certain railway lines, in particular delays and repeated breakdowns. He called for offering a better quality service, meeting citizens’ expectations, while improving the transport of goods by rail and the profitability of the sector.
He also insisted on the continuation of structural and managerial reforms in freight transport, through continuous assessment of economic performance, modernization of infrastructure and upgrading of equipment to strengthen the competitiveness of the sector.
Among the instructions given also include the strengthening of controls in stations and at level crossings in order to limit dangerous behavior, as well as the possibility of entrusting train safety to specialized companies according to precise specifications.
The minister welcomed the positive results recorded during last summer, thanks to the return to service of seven rehabilitated Coradia trains, just as he ordered the acceleration of the repair and reintegration of other trains as quickly as possible. The minister also welcomed the results obtained in the fight against the silting of railway lines in the South, stressing that no train cancellations have been recorded until October 2025, compared to more than a thousand annual cases before 2022.
In addition, he encouraged the use of specialized expertise and collaboration with start-ups and young innovators, bringing intelligent solutions to solve technical problems and improve overall performance.
The meeting also provided an opportunity to take stock of the Algiers Airport modernization project and the efforts aimed at improving the services offered there. The minister mentioned the program to import 10,000 buses as part of the renewal of the national fleet of land passenger transport, calling for revising the specifications in order to raise the level of services, particularly in terms of reception, security, cleanliness and training of transporters.
