Rabbi Alvin Kass, Beloved NYPD Chief Chaplain and Moral Compass of the Force, Passes Away at 89

Rabbi Alvin Kass, the NYPD’s chief chaplain and its longest-serving and oldest member, has passed away. For nearly sixty years he stood at the center of the Department’s moral life, ministering to cops and their families through joy, loss, and everything in between.

He joined the NYPD in 1966 at just 30 years old—the youngest chaplain in its history—and never stopped answering the call. A U.S. Air Force veteran and Columbia graduate, his rabbinic voice carried authority without theatrics, earned in service to this city and to the men and women who protect it.

On 9/11 he rushed to help, consoling the families of the 23 officers who never came home, then kept showing up for the next two decades whenever the badge needed a steady hand and a steady heart. At every Academy graduation he offered the same blessing—that New York be “a place where people of every race, religion, color, and creed can pursue their individual destinies untrammeled, unafraid, and in obedience to Thy will.”

💔 May his memory be a blessing.
