The Minister of Energy and Renewable Energy, Mourad Adjal, chaired, last Tuesday in Algiers, the opening ceremony of the joint conference on “non-electrical applications of nuclear energy”, organized over two days in partnership between the Atomic Energy Commission (Comena) and the Russian Federal Atomic Energy Agency (Rosatom).
According to a press release from the ministry, the minister recalled, in his opening speech, “the depth of the bilateral and historical relations uniting Algeria and the Russian Federation”, stressing that this conference is being held at a time when the Algerian Government attaches major importance to the fight against cancer and the use of nuclear medicine, in accordance with the guidelines of the President of the Republic, aiming to direct investments in the field of nuclear energy towards medical applications, in particular radiotherapy for the benefit of cancer and other diseases requiring the use of this technology.
Mr. Adjal reviewed the wide range of applications of nuclear energy, including in the fields of energy, agriculture, industry and water resources, such as seawater desalination and combating drought.
He mentioned the Government’s program relating to the use of nuclear energy to develop the local production of radiopharmaceuticals, in order to meet the growing national needs in this area, to secure the supply chain and to guarantee their permanent availability. This approach, he added, will make it possible to reduce the importation of radiopharmaceuticals, improve patient care and shorten waiting times for treatments.
The minister underlined the importance of this meeting to exchange expertise and take advantage of the rich Russian experience through ”Rosatom” in the field of nuclear medicine and the production of radioactive isotopes, in order to strengthen training and technology transfer capacities in other areas, such as the development of small modular reactors, their use in electricity production and water desalination.
He also insisted on the need to strengthen cooperation in order to put in place effective and concrete mechanisms to benefit from the peaceful uses of nuclear energy and its technologies, which offer relevant solutions to challenges in many vital areas.
The conference was organized at the ministry’s headquarters in the presence of the Atomic Energy Commissioner, the president of the National Health Security Agency (Anss), the president of the National Commission for the Prevention and Control of Cancer (Cnplcc), the president of the National Authority of the Anss as well as a large number of experts from ”Rosatom” and executives from the ministry.
