The control and remote monitoring system of the electricity transport and distribution network, known as “SCADA”, will be rehabilitated from 2026. The announcement was made Thursday by the Minister of Energy and Renewable Energy, Mourad Adjal. “The sector will proceed, from 2026, to the rehabilitation of the control and remote monitoring system of the electricity transport and distribution network, known as “SCADA”, with the aim of further improving the public electricity service throughout the national territory,” he said.
It was during a plenary session at the Council of the Nation devoted to oral questions and chaired by Azouz Nasri, President of the Council, in the presence of the Minister of Relations with Parliament, Nadjiba Djilali. Reaffirming, in passing, the permanent mobilization of the Energy and Renewable Energy sector to meet the needs of citizens in electricity and gas, in accordance with the guidelines of the President of the Republic, who instructed to find solutions to supply all the wilayas of the country with electricity, including remote areas, in particular through the exploitation of solar panels.
The “SCADA” system rehabilitation project which will be implemented over a period of five years, the minister said, will require considerable investments. “The company responsible for its implementation has already been selected, and the first phase of the operation will begin in large cities before being gradually extended to all wilayas in the country,” he indicated. Noting that thanks to the “SCADA” system, the supervision and control centers under the Sonelgaz group can precisely locate breakdowns on regional electricity distribution networks, thus facilitating rapid intervention for their repair.
Referring to energy coverage in the far east of the country, the minister specified that work to renew the electricity network between the wilaya of El Tarf and Bir El Ater has reached a progress rate of 70%. “The entire network will be renewed during the year 2026,” he continued. Noting that the wilaya of El Tarf has benefited from several programs which allowed the connection of 34,756 homes to natural gas, in addition to a program dedicated to gray areas which made it possible to connect 970 homes to natural gas. Just like the wilaya of Batna which has also benefited from several public gas and electricity distribution programs aimed at connecting more than 30,000 homes to gas and nearly 12,000 homes to electricity, thus bringing the coverage rates to 89% for gas and 98% for electricity.
Finally, returning to the damage caused by uncontrolled urban works near electricity and gas networks, the minister insisted on the importance of strengthening awareness on this subject, stressing that the safety of citizens remains an absolute priority, and that the ministry, in coordination with the walis, is working to resolve these issues in several wilayas of the country.
