Israel’s defense and intelligence services are quietly hardening for a new vector of attack from the east, with assessments that Iran’s proxy militias in Iraq could launch coordinated waves of missiles and one-way drones at Israeli targets. The concept mirrors the first days of the war: mass salvos from deep range, potentially paired with follow-on moves through Syria toward the Jordan–Israel border. 

Tehran’s Quds Force is actively knitting this network together. Commander Esmail Qaani has held recent meetings in Iraq with militia chiefs, while Iran’s favored arm, Kataib Hezbollah, sits atop long-range drones, smuggling routes into Syria, and a record of missile/drone strikes against U.S. and Israeli targets. These are terrorists, bankrolled and directed by Iran, built for deniable pressure on Israel. 

Jerusalem isn’t waiting. Reporting points to preemptive strikes on Iranian logistics nodes on the Iran–Iraq frontier and accelerated training by Israel’s 96th “Gilad” Division in the Jordan Valley—part of a broader doctrine proven during “Operation Rising Lion,” which fused covert assets and airpower to dismantle enemy systems in depth. Expect the same toolkit if launch sites in Iraq are activated. 

An Iraq front stretches Israel’s air-defense arc and adds mileage for intercepts—but it also puts Iranian proxies within Israel’s strike envelope. Iraqi militias have already tried to hit Israel with drones; the IDF intercepted one such UAV after it entered via Syria. If Iran’s proxies test this lane again, Israel is positioned to hit back—at the shooters, their chains, and the hands pulling the strings in Tehran.
