The fishing and aquaculture sector continues to grow. The Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries oversaw the stocking of around 46 million fingerlings, recording an increase of more than 50% compared to the previous year. This was announced this Sunday by the Director General of Maritime Fisheries, Miloud Tria, specifying that freshwater production should reach 1,800 tonnes this year.
The official stressed the need for Algeria to invest in aquatic processing industries, a sector with high economic potential for producers and industrialists. He cited, as an example, tuna, currently exported in its raw state, believing that it would be more beneficial to promote it through local processing.
Tria also insisted on the importance of controlling essential aquaculture inputs, particularly fish feed, whose national production remains insufficient. Dependence on imports makes investors vulnerable to fluctuations in the international market, hence, according to him, the need to develop local production of aquaculture feed in order to ensure the sustainability of the projects.
During his intervention on National Radio, the manager also indicated that the national production of fry is today considered sufficient to cover the needs of the domestic market. This is why, he explained, he contacted the Ministry of Foreign Trade to prohibit the importation of fry intended for seeding, at the request of economic operators in the sector. Regarding the next International Fisheries and Aquaculture Exhibition (SIPA 2025), Mr. Tria announced the participation of 180 exhibitors, including 25 foreigners representing 17 Arab, European and Latin American countries, including Mexico.
This event aims to highlight Algeria’s capabilities in the fields of fishing and aquaculture, to present completed or ongoing projects, and to provide an exchange platform for researchers and players in the sector wishing to share their innovations and know-how.
This event, which will be organized in its 10e edition, constitutes a space to expose the investment opportunities offered in the sector, particularly in the areas of aquaculture, shipbuilding, processing industries, packaging and distribution techniques, as well as in the areas of maritime financing and insurance, according to the management under the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries, according to Mr. Tria.
On the sidelines of the Show, several technical workshops and scientific conferences are on the program, in partnership with regional and international organizations, such as the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the West-Med Initiative, in addition to examining themes linked to climate change, artificial intelligence and maritime entrepreneurship. This show, scheduled for November 6 to 9, also devotes a space dedicated to start-ups and innovative projects, in order to strengthen the use of technology in maritime value chains, and to allow young people to present their projects to investors and donors.
