More than 6,000 deaths on the roads in two years!

A rate that disturbs the new highway code

The national road network records, daily, an average of 250 accidents and between 6 to 10 deaths. Thousands of Algerians die each year due to traffic accidents and the human factor remains the dominant cause of this worrying situation, of the order of 95%.
Between 2024 and 2025, nearly 6,000 Algerians lost their lives on the roads. Opposite, the State and through the Ministry of Justice is in the process of preparing a response. A response which, this time, seems decisive. This is the bill for the new highway code.
Despite heavy reports disseminated daily and regularly by Civil Protection, communicating a significant number of deaths and injuries in traffic accidents, as was the case with yesterday’s report announcing 40 deaths and 1,747 injured through 1,500 accidents during the period from October 26 to November 1, the fight against dangerous driving on the roads has not faltered, on the contrary, it has amplified and solidified thanks to the extreme will of the State to finally, restore “road” order through an arsenal of decisions and measures taken in person by the Head of State, Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
The replacement of old public transport buses with new ones is one of the key decisions taken by the State to stem the phenomenon of road accidents in the country, but there is also the important preparation of the bill for the new highway code which will, without a doubt, fully contribute to curbing the considerable rate of road accidents and that of victims. The new highway code does not forgive anyone, including the parties concerned and responsible for road accidents, this is a first in Algeria. The State has decided to toughen sanctions against any person and organization responsible for road accidents, just as the State has decided to reorganize the public transport road fleet by importing tens of thousands of passenger buses to replace the old road fleet.
Important decisions which will certainly reduce the rate of road accidents and save human lives. Due to the dizzying increase in road accidents observed over the last two years, or even between 2024 and 2025, where more than 6,000 human lives were lost on the roads, the time has come to restore road order and put an end to the dark series of fatal accidents on our roads.
In 2024 alone, more than 3,700 people will die on the roads, according to the National Center for Prevention and Road Safety (Cnpsr). The next highway code will be a real stick that will fall on the head of anyone responsible for road accidents, including driving schools and vehicle technical inspection establishments and even the Transport Directorate of each wilaya.
The sad bus accident in El-Harrach on August 15, 2025 which caused the death of 19 people and aroused the anger of citizens was the start of a new revolution of reorganization, security and modernization of the public transport sector in the country, and one of the essential reasons for the preparation of a new highway code. This horrible road accident in the middle of Algiers, involving a minibus ”overloaded” with 45 passengers, causing 19 deaths and 25 injuries, had demonstrated, very clearly, the great evil hidden in the country’s public transport sector.
The dilapidation of the road park was ”transported” that day by the Algerians, particularly on social networks. Images of the accident were broadcast on social networks, which caused “emotion and indignation across the country”. Following this serious accident, the President of the Republic Abdelmadjid Tebboune announced a day of mourning and ordered the ban on the circulation of buses in operation for more than 30 years, within a period not exceeding six months, before taking the decision to import 10,000 buses to remedy the obsolescence of passenger buses in the country.
The expertise carried out by gendarme experts from the National Institute of Forensic Science and Criminology (INCC) of the National Gendarmerie of Bouchaoui (Algiers) demonstrated that the origin of the accident was mainly mechanical due to the dilapidation of the bus. This concerns the “blocking of the steering system due to a breakdown in the steering ball joint, which paralyzed the bus”, while the Minister of Transport Saïd Sayoud had reported that 90% of bus accidents are the consequence of excessive speed, it should be remembered.
