Soutien continu de JICA aux efforts de l’Algérie – Le Jeune Indépendant

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) plans to mark its participation in the 10e edition of the International Fisheries and Aquaculture Exhibition (SIPA-2025) which is held from November 6 to 9, 2025 in Oran, through the organization of a national workshop under the theme: “Towards sustainable and participatory management of fishery resources”. JICA thus reiterates its commitment to supporting Algeria’s efforts for a sustainable blue economy.

Scheduled for the third day of the Show, under the patronage of the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, with the theme “Fishing and aquaculture: innovation and partnerships”, the JICA workshop will highlight the importance of artificial reefs as a tool for restoring marine habitats and sustainable management of artisanal fisheries. This was indicated by the Agency in a press release, noting the presentation, during this workshop, of the Algerian-Japanese cooperation project entitled “Promotion of co-management of artisanal fishing in Algeria”, which will be moderated by Nanao Hitonori, JICA expert.

Among the participants are executives from the fishing and aquaculture sector, researchers from the National Center for Research and Development of Fisheries and Aquaculture (CNRDPA) and universities, artisanal fishermen and local associations, as well as representatives of the Japanese Embassy and civil society organizations, JICA said, referring to the activities it has carried out in this direction.

Artificial reefs were installed in November 2024 in Oran, with the support of JICA and in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries, it was recalled. The objective is to preserve biodiversity in the marine space and promote sustainable fishing for local communities.

An underwater mission carried out in October 2025 confirmed the success of this installation, which allows it to be considered as good practice in the co-management of artisanal fishing in Algeria, according to the same source.

Through this initiative, the JICA agency reaffirms its “commitment to supporting Algeria’s efforts for a sustainable blue economy, based on community participation and the protection of fishery resources”.
