Investment opportunities in the fishing sector in Algeria were highlighted by the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries, Yacine El-Mehdi Oualid, during the 10th edition of the International Fisheries and Aquaculture Exhibition “SIPA 2025”, which he inaugurated on Thursday in the wilaya of Oran.
The same official underlined the importance of this event and encouraged taking advantage of this opportunity to establish partnerships with the Sultanate of Oman, guest of honor of this edition, due to the country’s experience in this area. “Algeria offers promising investment opportunities in the fishing sector and fish processing industries,” said the Minister of Agriculture, emphasizing the importance of developing economic partnerships in the fields of fishing and aquaculture.
Accompanied by the Minister of Knowledge Economy, Start-ups and Microenterprises, as well as the Omani Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, Saoud bin Hamoud bin Ahmed Al-Habsi, the Sultanate of Oman being the guest of honor of this edition of SIPA, Yacine El-Mehdi Oualid insisted on the need to take advantage of this event, organized at the initiative of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries, through the National Chamber of Fisheries and Aquaculture, “to conclude agreements and partnerships between the two countries in the field of fishing and aquaculture”.
He also highlighted the importance of strengthening cooperation and the exchange of expertise in this strategic sector. Highlighting the efforts and means deployed by the State to encourage investment in the sector, in particular through the granting of tax advantages, authorization to import specialized equipment, as well as support for deep-sea fishing projects and the development of inland aquaculture, the minister called for the development of “pragmatic economic partnerships” in the fishing and aquaculture sector. Concrete cooperation and the exchange of expertise constitute two essential pillars for the development of this strategic sector as well as for meeting the needs of the national market for seafood products, according to the minister.
Oman wants to consolidate its cooperation with Algeria
Underlining the importance of SIPA, it being “a meeting space for actors and professionals from various countries in order to examine the prospects for development of the sector and to access new markets”, the minister expressed the hope that this participation marks the start of fruitful and expanded cooperation between Algeria and the Sultanate of Oman.
For his part, the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources of the Sultanate of Oman, Saoud bin Hamoud bin Ahmed Al-Habsi, praised the solidity of fraternal relations with Algeria, affirming that economic cooperation between his country and Algeria is entering a more dynamic phase, focused on concrete investment projects.
The participation of his country as guest of honor in this event represents, he indicated, the continuity of a growing economic partnership with Algeria, which gained new momentum following the bilateral agreements signed in 2025. Mr. Al-Habsi recalled that the agreements concluded during the visit of Sultan Haitham ben Tariq to Algeria, in May 2025, marked “a major economic turning point”, in particular with the signing two executive programs and a memorandum of understanding in the agricultural and fisheries fields.
The minister stressed that the development of joint investment projects now constitutes an economic priority for the two countries, adding that discussions are underway for the creation of an Omani-Algerian company specializing in the manufacturing of agricultural and maritime equipment and the development of aquaculture projects.
He added that cooperation could also extend to areas such as product quality control, development of production technologies and exchange of expertise in desert agriculture. Projects that he described as “highly profitable”, capable of generating jobs and increasing the productive capacities of the two countries, while strengthening their food security.
Mr. Al-Habsi thus expressed his country’s desire to consolidate cooperation with Algeria in the sector of agriculture and fisheries resources. According to him, the “SIPA 2025” Show constitutes a concrete platform for establishing partnerships and identifying cooperation opportunities between economic operators from the two countries, highlighting Omani know-how in the fisheries sector.
Placed under the theme “Innovation and knowledge”, this 10th edition of SIPA brings together 179 exhibitors from 17 countries and will be held until November 9 at the Oran Convention Center.
Digitalization to develop the fishing sector
The importance of digitalization of the fishing and aquaculture sector was on the agenda of a specialized workshop, organized by the General Directorate of Fisheries and Aquaculture on the sidelines of SIPA 2025. This workshop, which was kicked off by the Minister of Agriculture, aims to strengthen the digital transition of the sector through the development of a modern national information system to improve the monitoring of maritime activities, to optimize management tools and set up a unified database relating to production, the fishing fleet and aquaculture, indicated the organizers.
The workshop also aims to study ways to integrate technological innovation into marine resource management. The importance of adopting digitalization in the sector was highlighted by the participants, who discussed the design stages of the sectoral information system, currently being developed as part of a national master plan.
