A new platform for promotion and distribution

Marketing of red tilapia

New for breeders of red tilapia, a freshwater fish. The General Directorate of Fisheries and Aquaculture under the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries is preparing to launch a new digital platform for the marketing of red tilapia. “This platform will offer breeders throughout the country the opportunity to market their products,” said the general director, Miloud Tariaa. Revealing, on the occasion, the signing, the day before yesterday Friday, by the National Chamber of Fisheries and Aquaculture, of an agreement with the National Livestock Feeding Office (Onab) aimed at promoting the marketing of red tilapia.
This was signed by the director general of the National Chamber of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Nabil Aouich and the deputy director of Onab, Houssameddine Hamma, as part of overcoming the difficulties encountered by producers in the field of marketing certain varieties, such as red tilapia, through the establishment of regular distribution channels contributing to the stability of the market. The agreement aims to strengthen cooperation in the field of marketing of aquaculture products, particularly freshwater products such as red tilapia, by integrating them into the national network of Onab sales points.
Speaking on the sidelines of the 10th edition of the International Fisheries and Aquaculture Exhibition “SIPA 2025”, which is being held until today, November 9 at the Oran Convention Center, the same manager indicated that the project is in its final phase.
“The platform will allow any red tilapia producer in Algeria to register and record their data, including the location of the production site (commune or region), as well as the corresponding production schedule,” he continued, noting that its management will be entrusted to the National Chamber of Fisheries and Aquaculture.
The National Livestock Feeding Office (Onab), observed Miloud Tariaa, today has more than 200 direct sales points.
“This company has already carried out several pilot operations which allowed it to sell the entire production of red tilapia from last year quickly, which led it to request more quantities,” he said. Emphasizing that this new digital platform will serve as a database for the promotion and distribution of red tilapia, allowing Onab, thanks to this information, to know the volumes available each month and to facilitate their distribution through points of sale in the national territory.
Emphasizing the current importance given to promoting the marketing of red tilapia, in order to encourage greater production, the same official announced that Onab will soon create a subsidiary specializing in aquaculture, which will become the first economic enterprise in the maritime fishing sector.
“A second phase will aim to promote the processing of this freshwater fish,” he said. Revealing that tripartite agreements will soon be signed between Onab, the National Chamber of Fisheries and Aquaculture and processors interested in red tilapia.
Finally, with regard to the production of this species, the general director affirmed that a significant increase is expected this year, with, he further indicated, a production estimated at around 1,800 tonnes, an increase of almost 40% compared to the previous year, when production amounted to 1,000 tonnes.
