A genetic improvement project for the local Algerian breed of bees was launched on Tuesday in Oran. According to the Misserghine Chamber of Agriculture, this project aims to increase the productivity and quality of honey, while making the local bee more resistant to the country’s climatic conditions.
This project, carried out in coordination with the Chamber of Agriculture, seeks to develop the national beekeeping sector and improve the yield of the local breed. It also aims to correct certain behaviors, notably
“reduce your aggressiveness,” Nacer Benayada, initiator of this scientific experiment, explained to the APS during a meeting organized at the Chamber in the presence of several beekeepers. The improvement operation concerns the tellian race, known by the scientific name ”Apis mellifera intermissa”.
Mr. Benayada, who supervises the training as part of the project, indicated that it is carried out in collaboration with professors Mohamed Chehbar and Mohamed Hakim Tefal from the University of Tissemsilt, as well as Samir Gouarem from the University of Tlemcen. This meeting made it possible to present the broad outlines of the program and to outline its long-term objectives.
