Des relations historiques – La Nouvelle République Algérie

Historical relationships

Algerian observers note that Algeria and Somalia are driven by a strong political will to breathe new life into bilateral cooperation relations. They underline that these relations, drawing their strength from the values of understanding, solidarity and mutual trust, are expected to be further strengthened and reach higher levels on the occasion of the official visit started on Monday in Algeria by the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. Relations between the two countries have experienced, according to Algerian observers, in recent years, a sustained dynamic, reflected by continuous contacts between the leaders of the two countries, who aspire to a new phase of fruitful cooperation and the unification of efforts concerning issues of common interest.

In this context, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune met his Somali counterpart at the beginning of November 2022 in Algiers, on the sidelines of his participation in the 31st session of the Arab Summit, during which the Somali President welcomed Algeria’s efforts in favor of joint Arab action, expressing his country’s recognition for the sincere efforts made by the President of the Republic to bring closer views between the Palestinian factions and achieve a settlement and an agreement. The President of the Republic also sent, in December 2024, a letter to his Somali counterpart, delivered by the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Kamel Baddari. During a telephone interview in September 2024, the Somali President congratulated the President of the Republic on his re-election for a new presidential term, reaffirming his desire to work to “strengthen bilateral relations in order to raise them to the rank of excellence in the service of the Algerian and Somali people”.

In November of the same year, the President of the Republic received Mr. Dahir Mohamud Gelle, advisor and special envoy of the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, who carried a letter to the President of the Republic, in which he expressed his aspiration that historic Algerian-Somali relations remain strong, as they have always been. In the same context, the Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad and African Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, had talks with the Somali Deputy Prime Minister, on the sidelines of his participation in the work of the 3rd Southern Summit, which was held in January 2024 in Kampala (Uganda).
