Ron Dermer steps down — Netanyahu’s most trusted ally exits cabinet but stays in the fight

Ron Dermer has submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, ending his stint as strategic affairs minister and the premier’s closest in-cabinet fixer. He told Netanyahu he’d promised his family a two-year cap, extending twice to push Israel’s goals on Iran and the Gaza war, including the hostages track.

In his letter, Dermer wrote that this government will be remembered both for October 7 and for its management of the multi-front war that followed, while pledging to “secure the future of the Jewish people” in whatever he does next.

Israeli Ambassador to the U.S. Yechiel Leiter is set to absorb a larger share of the Washington portfolio, while Dermer continues as Netanyahu’s special envoy on select files, including advancing the Abraham Accords. The handoff plan was signaled last week.

A former ambassador in Washington, Dermer operated as Netanyahu’s de facto foreign minister through the war—managing ties with the U.S., Arab states, and ceasefire negotiations—making his exit significant but not a break with the PM. His resignation underscores a controlled transition, not a rupture.
