Lieutenant General Saïd Chanegriha, Minister Delegate to the Minister of National Defense and Chief of Staff of the People’s National Army (ANP), received this Wednesday the Minister of Defense and Veterans of the Republic of Zimbabwe, visiting Algeria.
According to a press release from the Ministry of National Defense, the Chief of Staff assured, in a speech, that this visit reflects the depth of historical ties between the two countries, as well as the common desire of the highest authorities of the two countries to strengthen cooperation, particularly in the areas of defense and security.
On this occasion, the lieutenant general recalled that relations between Algeria and Zimbabwe date back to the period of struggles for independence, the two nations sharing the fight for freedom, dignity and national sovereignty.
“Since their independence, both countries have supported the liberation of Africa from colonialism and apartheid, maintaining relations based on mutual respect, solidarity and constructive cooperation, with constant coordination and converging visions on major continental issues,” he said.
General Chanegriha also recalled that this cooperation was strengthened during the official visit of Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa to Algeria last July. “This meeting allowed the exchange of visions on strengthening the partnership, improving coordination on African and international issues, and concluded with the signing of several agreements and memorandums of understanding in various areas,” he explained.
As a reminder, Algeria and Zimbabwe signed several agreements and memoranda of understanding this summer in various areas of cooperation. They include an agreement between the Chambers of Commerce and Industry of the two countries and a memorandum of understanding between the Algerian Investment Promotion Agency (AAPI) and the Zimbabwean Agency for Investment and Development (ZIDA).
The two countries also signed an agreement in the field of vocational training and technical education and another in the field of higher education and scientific research. The fourth bilateral agreement concerns cooperation in tourism. In addition, a memorandum of understanding in the field of archives, as well as a final minutes of the 4e session of the Algerian-Zimbabwean joint cooperation commission were signed.
It should be noted that the two countries displayed a total convergence of points of view on international and regional issues, in particular on the promotion of peaceful solutions to conflicts in Africa, respect for the sovereignty of States and the rejection of foreign interference. It is this sharing linked to the African liberation struggle which encourages the strengthening of historical relations.
