The number of agricultural investments connected to the electricity network since 2020 has exceeded 100,000, said yesterday Saturday in Algiers the Minister of Energy and Renewable Energy, Mourad Adjal, highlighting the sector’s efforts to contribute to strengthening national agricultural production. In a speech delivered at a meeting of sector officials, organized under the slogan “For a distinguished public service”, Mr. Ajal explained that “the Sonelgaz group has so far succeeded in connecting 100,432 agricultural investments to the electricity network.”
The program aimed at connecting agricultural investments to energy was launched in 2020, in accordance with the instructions of the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, concerning energy connectivity and achieving food security.
Referring to the sector’s efforts in terms of energy interconnection, the minister explained that the electricity coverage rate had reached 99% with more than 12.5 million subscribers, while the gas coverage rate exceeded 72% with more than 8.2 million subscribers.
Regarding the program for installing charging stations for electric vehicles, Mr. Ajal confirmed that 1,000 terminals have been installed throughout the national territory, including on the East-West highway, specifying that these terminals will be put into service “as soon as the regulatory and legal bases have been studied”.
Meanwhile, sector authorities have so far installed 17 million carbon monoxide detectors free of charge in the homes of citizens in all provinces of the country, according to the minister, who confirmed that the process is making “remarkable progress.”
Furthermore, the sector is committed to connecting five desalination plants to electricity “before the set deadlines”, in order to allow citizens to benefit from drinking water, while “the study and implementation of projects aimed at connecting three new plants to electricity will begin”, adds Mr. Ajal.
During the discussion on the renewable energy development program, which aims to achieve production of 15,000 megawatts from renewable sources by 2035,
Mr. Ajal highlighted that the first phase of the program, with a capacity of 3,200 megawatts spread across 14 states, had already been launched.
