The Algeria A’ team lowered its flag in Cairo, beaten by Egypt (3-2) during a friendly match in preparation for the FIFA Qatar 2025 Arab Cup. Twice in front, the Greens ended up suffering a comeback which risks leaving its mark, particularly on a mental level. Beyond the result, it is the content which calls out.
Aside from a few flashes behind goals from Boulbina (31′) and L’Ghoul (66′), Algeria showed little reassurance. The band’s first test at Farid Chaal left only a taste of unfinished business, if not worry. Especially since today’s adversary was nothing like an ogre. An Egypt A’ still under construction, far from the level of the flag selection. However, the copy made by Madjid Bougherra’s protégés reveals the obvious: there is an urgent need to correct the situation.
The defensive project, in particular, promises to be colossal. Three goals conceded, including one against his side, illustrate a glaring lack of rigor and errors which will not be forgiven in official competition. In three days, the two selections will return for a second friendly match. In the meantime, Bougherra will have to review his plans… and undoubtedly some of his choices. Less than three weeks before the start of the Arab Cup, concern is gaining ground. Perhaps this is a quick reaction, thanks to a preparation match that is always misleading. But one thing is certain, this performance calls for at least tinkering, at best a real revolution.
Egypt-Algeria advanced to 3:00 p.m.
The second friendly confrontation between the two Egyptian and Algerian A’ national teams, initially scheduled for Monday, November 17 in Cairo at 5:00 p.m., has been brought forward to 3:00 p.m. (Algerian time), indicated the Algerian Football Federation (FAF). The objective of this confrontation will be to remedy the inadequacies noted during the first test, and to approach the rest of the preparation with greater confidence in view of the Fifa Qatar Arab Cup 2025 (December 1-18, says the federal body on its official website.
The first meeting between the two A’ selections, played on Friday at the Cairo International Stadium, ended with the victory of the Egyptian team with a score of 3-2, half-time (1-1). As a reminder, the Algerian selection (holder of the Arab title) is qualified directly for the final phase of the next FIFA Arab Cup 2025. In Qatar, the “Greens” will play in group D alongside Iraq, as well as the winners of the play-offs Bahrain-Djibouti and Lebanon-Sudan, scheduled for Wednesday, November 26.
Egypt is placed in Group C alongside Jordan and the Emirates, as well as the winner of the match between Kuwait and Mauritania, scheduled for Tuesday, November 25. The top two from each group will qualify for the quarter-finals.
Bougherra: “Many positive points”
Madjid Bougherra said he was fully satisfied with the match played at the Cairo Stadium, a place full of good memories for him. According to the coach, this test against Egypt was essential before the Arab Cup, in particular because of the high level and solid collective of the Pharaohs. He believes that the match made it possible to identify areas for improvement while revealing positive points. Bougherra also underlines the need to properly manage players not affected by the CAN, in anticipation of possible adjustments. Finally, he recalls that as title holder, Algeria will be particularly expected.
