During the meeting of the Council of Ministers that he chaired yesterday, Sunday, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune instructed the Minister of Finance to prepare a bill aimed at increasing the Guaranteed National Minimum Salary (SNMG) and unemployment benefit. As a reminder, last August, the secretary general of the UGTA, Amar Takdjout, told our colleague Horizons that for the revaluation of the SNMG, “the principle is established”. He indicated that the demand for the revaluation of the SNMG received a favorable response from President Tebboune.
“We called for the revaluation of the SNMG and the President responded favorably. The demand could be answered at the end of 2025, beginning of 2026,” assured Amar Takdjout.
In the same vein, we know that President Tebboune had given instructions so that the Finance Law (LF) 2026 does not provide for any increase that overwhelms the purchasing power of the citizen. Last September, he announced that new increases in salaries, unemployment benefits and student grants would be applied from 2026 and could also affect retirement pensions, depending on the state’s resources. It was during his periodic interview with the media where the President of the Republic addressed the aspect relating to the strengthening of social achievements, affirming in this regard that he “remains attached to the commitments he has made to the Algerian people”.
“The distinction between promises and commitments is clear. My commitments are recorded in writing and will be implemented,” he maintained. On this subject, the President of the Republic then specified: “I had made a commitment to proceed, from 2026, to a review of salary increases as well as student grants and unemployment benefits, revaluations which could also include retirement pensions, depending on the means of the State”, adding that “the objective of all these measures is to improve the purchasing power of our fellow citizens, an improvement that Algerians already perceive.
The President of the Republic stressed that the achievement of this objective “is part of the daily work carried out with the Prime Minister and members of the Government”. In addition to this question relating to the protection of purchasing power, the meeting of the Council of Ministers yesterday Sunday was devoted to presentations relating in particular to the promotion of administrative districts in the Hauts-Plateaux and the South into wilayas in their own right, to monitoring the progress of the construction work on the Gara Djebilet mine and the Tindouf-Béchar mining railway line, to the completion of the work on the University Hospital Center with a capacity of 500 beds. in Constantine and the acquisition of specialized equipment for the benefit of the Digital Development Support Company (EADN).
President Tebboune has therefore decided to elevate eleven administrative districts to the rank of full-fledged wilayas in the Hauts-Plateaux and the South. He also ordered that the exploitation of iron ore from Gara Djebilet begins in the first quarter of 2026, with the aim of achieving self-sufficiency and gradually reducing the import bill.
The Council of Ministers confirmed that the railway line linking Tindouf to Béchar will be operational by January 2026 and that this event will be commemorated with a national day celebrating this important development achievement.
Furthermore, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune ordered an investigation into the fires which broke out in several wilayas of the country.
