100,000 farms connected to the electricity network in five years
Algeria’s food security is strengthening, growing and expanding
While the electricity coverage rate has reached 99% and the gas coverage rate has exceeded 72% in Algeria, the country’s food security has been strengthened, in five years, with a new connection to the electricity network for more than 100,000 farms. Algeria is on a major march towards electricity, agricultural and gas self-sufficiency.
The day before yesterday, Saturday and during a professional meeting organized in Algiers, bringing together those responsible for the energy and agriculture sector around the theme “For a quality public service”, the Minister of Energy and Renewable Energy, Mourad Adjal declared that the agricultural sector was strengthened, between the period from 2020 to 2025, by the creation of 100,432 new farms which were all connected to the electricity network. Highlighting the sector’s efforts in strengthening national agricultural production, and in a speech delivered to sector officials, Minister Adjal specified that “to date, the Sonelgaz group has connected 100,432 farms to the electricity network”, in application of the instructions of the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, aimed at ensuring electricity connection and achieving food security. According to Mourad Adjal, the electricity coverage rate in the country reached 99% in 2025 for more than 12.5 million homes, while that of gas coverage exceeded 72% a few weeks before the end of the current year, where more than 8.2 million customers were connected to the gas network. Furthermore, regarding the program for the deployment of charging stations for electric vehicles, Mourad Adjal affirmed that 1,000 charging points have been created across the national territory, including on the East-West highway, specifying that their commissioning will take place “as soon as the regulatory and legal framework under study is finalized.” Regarding the major plan to install carbon monoxide detectors in all homes in the country, here the Minister of Energy and Renewable Energy has indicated that the operation is “going well”, he estimates, specifying that more than 17 million carbon monoxide detectors have been installed “free of charge” by sector services in homes across all wilayas. Continuing his speech, the first senior official of the Ministerial Department of Energy and Renewable Energies recalled, the day before yesterday in Algiers, that the five (5) seawater desalination plants recently inaugurated by the Head of State, were all connected to the electricity network “before the expected deadlines”, thanks to the efforts mobilized by the sector’s services so that citizens can be supplied with drinking water. Also, Mourad Adjal added “that the study and implementation of projects to connect three (3) new stations will soon be carried out”. Addressing the renewable energy development program, which aims to achieve production of 15,000 MW from renewable sources by 2035, Minister Adjal reported the effective launch of the implementation of the first tranche of this program, with a capacity of 3,200 MW spread over 14 wilayas. As for the off-grid solar energy program, here the minister unveiled preparations for the launch of a new program aimed at supplying electricity to landlocked regions far from the grid, particularly in the south of the country, through individual solar devices and off-grid photovoltaic plants, he announced in his speech. In the field of hydrogen, the minister highlighted the significant capacities and assets available to Algeria, noting that the national road map for the development of hydrogen has entered its second phase. Referring to nuclear energy, Mourad Adjal explained that his ministerial department was working to direct the Nuclear Research Center towards the production of radioactive isotopes and radiopharmaceuticals necessary for medical use, in particular for the diagnosis and treatment of patients. Finally, and regarding international cooperation projects, the minister underlined the importance of the electricity interconnection project between the North and South of the Mediterranean basin, which opens promising prospects for the export of clean electricity, thus consolidating Algeria’s position as the main energy supplier to Europe and Africa.
