Mutually beneficial cooperation.
The energy sector is becoming increasingly important in cooperation between Algeria and Germany. Ways to strengthen this cooperation in the areas of marketing of natural gas, development and transport of green hydrogen, in addition to hydrocarbons and mines, were at the center of discussions between the Minister of State, Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines, Mohamed Arkab and the Secretary of State at the Ministry of Economy, Regional Development and Energy of Bavaria (Germany), Tobias Gotthardt.
During a meeting, held this Wednesday in Algiers, Arkab and Gotthardt, who came at the head of a delegation, reviewed a good number of files that could constitute mutually beneficial cooperation, it is indicated in a press release from the Ministry of Hydrocarbons. “The two parties discussed Algerian-German bilateral relations in the fields of hydrocarbons, the oil and gas industry, engineering and energy infrastructure, as well as the manufacturing of equipment, in particular those relating to the desalination of seawater, in addition to the exploitation and transformation of mining resources,” it is specified from the same source.
The discussions also focused on the prospects of strengthening cooperation through mutually beneficial partnership projects, including the commercialization of natural gas, the adoption of low-carbon techniques in the oil and gas industry, the development, transportation and marketing of green hydrogen, as well as the manufacturing of related equipment, such as electrolysers, according to the Algerian ministry.
The two sides also discussed expanding cooperation in the exploitation and processing of mineral resources, including phosphate and the production of phosphate fertilizers, as well as training, technical assistance, transfer of expertise and skills development, it was added.
Prospects for cooperation between Algerian and German companies in the fields of hydrocarbons and mining were also discussed, with particular emphasis on the importance of the exchange of expertise, technology transfer, specialized training and reduction of the carbon footprint, in accordance with the national vision of energy transition and global guidelines on climate protection.
Regarding cooperation in the development of hydrogen, the two parties expressed their satisfaction with the progress made in the Southern Hydrogen Corridor project (SoutH2 Corridor) as well as in the Algerian-European Alliance for Hydrogen (ALTEH2A), welcoming the conclusions of the international meeting recently held in Berlin, dedicated to the presentation of the progress of these strategic projects, with the participation of a large Algerian delegation from the sector.
In the same context, Mr. Arkab underlined the strategic priority that Algeria gives to the development of the hydrogen economy, noting that the State is in the process of completing the legal and institutional framework governing this activity, thus making it possible to attract more investments in the value chains linked to hydrogen and decarbonization.
Arkab also insisted on the importance of cooperation with Germany in modern technologies and advanced industrial experiences, and their valorization in joint projects in the best interests of both parties. Note that the meeting was held in the presence of the Secretary of State to the Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines, in charge of Mines, Karima Bakir Tafer, as well as ministry executives.
