A model for the rehabilitation of informal dumpsites across the country

The Minister of Environment and Life, Kaouthar Krikou, confirmed last Thursday that the experience of transforming the illegal dump of Oued Smar (Algiers) into an urban park constitutes a model of environmental preservation and rehabilitation of illegal dumps, which will be imitated and generalized in all provinces of the country.
During a public session of oral questions at the Popular National Assembly, chaired by the vice-president of the Assembly, Ahmed Mouaz, and attended by the Minister of Relations with Parliament, Nadjiba Djilali, the minister explained that the public landfill of Oued Smar, transformed into an urban park thanks to national capacities and expertise, now constitutes “a model to follow in terms of environmental preservation and rehabilitation of illegal dumps in the provinces of the country, and will be reproduced and generalized.
This statement followed a question from MP Nasser Boujeltia regarding the mechanisms used to remedy the damage caused by the wild dump in Chottia (Chlef), where she highlighted that work is underway in coordination between the sector and local authorities, pending the completion of the technical and administrative procedures necessary to launch the implementation process.
The same goes for the Hassi Lefhal (El Menia) landfill center project, where the minister indicated that the study for the construction of a controlled landfill has been completed, pending the completion of technical and administrative procedures for the implementation process.
Regarding the issue of the Aflou inert waste center, Ms. Krikou stressed that the land selection procedures at the local level, outside the urban area of the commune, have been completed and that the sector will work to study the finalization of the technical and administrative procedures in coordination with the local authorities.
Regarding the measures taken by the ministry to combat air pollution in Algiers and other cities, the minister underlined the great importance that her ministry attaches to the control of air quality, which testifies to the firm commitment of the State to reduce pollution in accordance with the objectives of sustainable development and in order to preserve the environment and the health of citizens.
Regarding the sector awareness programs, carried out in coordination with various sectors, she explained that they had enabled the creation of more than 12,000 school environmental clubs nationally and the training of more than 39,000 environmental facilitators through the National Environmental Training Institute across the country.
