A former Fatah security prisoner and ex–Palestinian Authority officer, Shouki Abu Nasira, has emerged as commander of a new armed militia in Khan Younis openly vowing to topple Hamas rule. In video from Gaza, he addresses around twenty gunmen, branding Hamas “fake” and Iran’s proxy before ordering them to chant “Death to Hamas.” 

Abu Nasira spent years in Israeli prison in the 1980s for terror activity, even escaping Nafha Prison before being recaptured. After his release he rose to a senior rank in PA security forces post-Oslo, later retiring. Since the war began, his son was reportedly killed and Hamas’s intelligence and internal security arms have threatened him directly.

His group is one of several anti-Hamas militias now operating in Gaza. In the Khan Younis area another force is led by former PA intelligence officer Hossam al-Astal, while further north and south the most prominent formation is Yasser Abu Shabab’s “Popular Forces” based in eastern Rafah, all openly opposing Hamas’s terror regime.
