Algeria has made great strides in the implementation of its national hydrogen development strategy, which it considers a major axis in its energy transition. This was indicated last Monday by the Minister of State, Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, during his participation in a high-level session entitled ”Unlocking the potential of clean hydrogen through investment and innovation”, on the sidelines of the work of the 21st General Conference of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).
According to a press release from the ministry, Mr. Arkab welcomed this meeting organized by UNIDO and the Global Environment Facility (GEF), while welcoming the choice of Algeria as a partner country in this ambitious initiative aimed at developing clean hydrogen, as one of the main energy solutions of the future.
Stressing that “Algeria has adopted a clear strategic choice consisting of making clean hydrogen a main axis of its energy transition”, the Minister of State noted that the development of this sector constitutes “an essential pillar”, in order to achieve sustainable, diversified and low-emission industrial growth.
In this context, Mr. Arkab recalled that Algeria adopted its national hydrogen strategy in 2023, accompanied by an operational roadmap based on progressive stages encompassing the development of the regulatory framework, the launch of pilot projects, the gradual expansion of production as well as the establishment of an integrated industry along the value chain, while supporting national export capacities.
The Minister of State underlined the “exceptional” advantage that Algeria has thanks to its immense solar resources, offering it a natural capacity to produce renewable hydrogen at “high competitiveness and on a large scale”. The country has thus taken big steps in this area, through the finalization of the regulatory framework, the launch of pilot projects in cooperation with several countries, and the introduction of specialties linked to hydrogen in higher education and scientific research programs, according to Mr. Arkab, who also indicated that the text of the 2026 Finance Law includes important incentives including exemption from customs duties and taxes on electrolysers and solar panels.
