Germany’s Merz Lands In Israel As Netanyahu Prepares For Tough Talk
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has landed at Ben Gurion Airport for his first visit to Israel as chancellor, greeted on the tarmac by Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, who called him a friend of Israel and underlined Germany’s role as a strategic partner.
Merz’s lightning visit comes after a rocky period in German-Israeli ties, including a partial freeze on arms exports for use in Gaza and sharp public criticism of Israeli operations, even as Berlin insists Israel’s security remains a core German interest. Jerusalem now wants clarity: renewed defense deliveries, stronger action against surging antisemitism in Germany, and less pressure over construction in Judea & Samaria, after Berlin urged a halt in building ahead of the trip.
Merz is expected to meet President Isaac Herzog in Jerusalem before talks and a joint press conference with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. On the table: the fragile Gaza ceasefire, Hezbollah on Israel’s northern border, and the future of flagship defense projects like the Arrow-3 system that Israel has already begun supplying to Germany.
He will also visit Yad Vashem and meet families of hostages and fallen Israelis, underscoring that for Israel this is not an abstract diplomatic file but a war for survival, with Germany’s historic responsibility front and center.
