DEVELOPING: Mediterranean Hunt for Missing Israeli Yacht Becomes Three-Nation Race Against Time
Israel’s Foreign Ministry says Israeli, Greek, and Cypriot forces are now jointly scouring the Mediterranean for the missing Israeli yacht that vanished en route to Cyprus during Storm Byron. Naval assets, aircraft, and rescue coordination centers are all locked on the last known position of the vessel.
The Foreign Ministry’s department for Israelis abroad, together with Israeli embassies in Cyprus and Greece, is in direct contact with the families and says teams are working “around the clock” on the case. Officials are also coordinating with Cyprus’s Joint Rescue Coordination Center in Larnaca, which is leading local search-and-rescue efforts in the area.
The yacht left Ashdod with at least four, and possibly five, Israelis on board; their condition is unknown. Contact was lost shortly before landfall near Cyprus, in heavy seas and strong winds. For now, families are left in limbo, refreshing phones and praying as every new pass by rescue aircraft could be the one that spots debris – or survivors.
