The agency reported that American forces intercepted and took control of an oil tanker subject to sanctions off the coast of Venezuela, sources familiar with the situation said.

Later, Trump confirmed the seizure of the tanker, but did not provide details.

Bloomberg notes that the seizure could complicate the export of Venezuelan oil: carriers, fearing sanctions consequences, are likely to become more cautious when loading its cargo. Most of Caracas’s exports are sent to China – usually through intermediaries and with significant discounts due to the risks associated with US restrictions.
