The EU decided to impose those sanctions in light of the “persistent actions that undermine democracy and the rule of law” in the Latin American country, as well as of “the continuous violations of human rights and the repression of civil society and the democratic opposition”, also in relation to the development and events following the presidential elections of July 28, 2024.
